Due to a University and State wide budget crisis, the administration at the University of Florida decided yesterday to eliminate the PhD program in philosophy. The program is currently ranked among the top 50 programs in the United States. However, we will now likely see a slow but sure demise of the department within 2-5 years. I will not be affected by these changes as far as I can tell, but the careers of several brilliant students, friends, and faculty members have essentially been put on hold or ruined.

This decision is misguided and shameful. Philosophy is a foundational discipline in the Liberal Arts and every major university in the world offers PhD's in the field. Someone has created a petition that will be sent to President Bernie Machen encouraging him to retain the PhD program. Please follow the link to the petition and sign if you feel inclined. Also, please let others know about this unfortunate turn of events. Your help is much appreciated.

PETITION

Oh, and then treat yourself to the new Batman trailer.

This is Fucked man! I'm so sorry and upset to hear this disconcerteing news. All I can say is "What the hell could the State Legislators possibly be thinking by cutting funding for education on every level." I mean, seriously what could be more significant for the future of your state than having people live here who are the best and brightest that they possibly can be. It's just a bunch of morons paving the way for yet another generation of morons to follow in theri foot-steps. Rich folks who don't clearly don't give a shit about the average man who they have been elected by to serve and protect the best interests of. They are selfish, greedy, and ruthless megalomainiacs. It's particularly embarassing in consideration of the botched primary thing down here all ready earlier this year. Welcome to FL. the lamest state in the union! Jeezus!!! Oh the fucking irony! I hope and pray that the current governing body for the state of Florida will be in for a seriously rude awakening from well informed and outraged voters in the upcoming elections in November. I for one have my voters card in hand and am eager and overjoyed to attempt to oust every single incumbant that voted for cutting education and attempting to sabotage programs for arts and public transportation in our state. What a bunch of fucking idiots! Let's bond together here and try to get these people out of office. The icing on the cake, in case you don't know, is that we pay millions of dollars a year in tax dollars for health insurance for every member of the legislative body of this state and all the member of their immediate families. What this breaks down to is, us the broken middle class tax payers being riden like jack asses by people who are wealthier and more educated than us in the form of us paying for their insurance, while so many regular working folks paying taxes through the nose cand never afford or hope to have health insurance for themselves or their families. This funding should be cut immediately and every penny of that tax payer money should be reinvested in education. These people are evil, and they are contorling our detiny as our elected officials. It's honestly sick. At least that how I feel about it, and I hope that I'm not alone. Be informed, get angry, and let's get these ass-holes out of office in November.

Sadly, I think that the demise will be fairly quick and sure: faculty will undoubtedly leave for greener pastures rather than be stuck teaching the nonsense courses previously allocated to graduate students; obviously, no new graduate students will be coming in; given the poor relationship with administration and ridiculously high standards for tenure, I can't imagine that UF will be anyone's first choice for a job and the quality of faculty is almost certain to suffer; and on top of that, the department's reputation is in the tank after two bad bits of press on leiterreports in the last year and is all but certain to drop off Leiter's map come rankings time.

I feel terrrible for everyone still there. Did Copp tell me that you will be finishing your dissertation next year? God I hope so--time to get on the market and quick. Best of luck, my friend.
