Roxanne Roxanne I want to be your man.... If you can remember that song then you must wonder what happened to the famous Roxanne Shante ? Well she is no longer just Roxanne Shante. She is DrRoxanne Shante. Yes, you read right. This young lady went on not to just conquer the Hip Hop world she is titled the First Female Rapper. She was the first to have a platinum single and Gold albums. She has appeared on Singles with all of QB Finest , Foxy Brown and even the late great Rick James, just to mention a few. Her recent appearances in both Beef Cd’s ( Beef I and Beef II ) showed the world that this lady could hang with the best of them and she has done so without even breaking a sweat . But today she is still making them sweat .She insist on making the Hip Hop world give back and pay atonement. But this woman has many reason to feel the way she does. She has earned the respect of many .DrRoxanne Shante a titled that she also has earned. She has a lot to be proud of . Roxanne Shante raised in the Queensbridge Public Housing Projects in Queens , New York released her first single at the age of 13 ( the response record to Roxanne Roxanne titled Roxanne’s Revenge that had more than 17 response records. Not long after she became a teenage mother, at the age of 14 in Newark , New Jersey . Moving to Newark, New Jersey gave Roxanne Shante a whole new outlook on street life and the importance of an education . She has manage to not only raise a teenage son but has also launched a Hip Hop Ices franchise .Her company Hip hop Ices is more than just a Hip Hop hot spot it is an information and safe environment meeting center for teenagers . Where they offer employment and seminars targeting the Music Industry including publishing and writers royalties . Hip hop Ices believes that an Entertainer with an education has the advantage . During her career Dr Roxanne Shante wasn’t always educated and because of this she was taken advantage of . But that could no longer be the case . When presented with the question Would she perform again she says” I perform everyday I perform my best in everything I do “. Well, from her track record we can’t argue with that. Dr. Roxanne Shante has appeared at the following Universities Savannah , Howard , Cheney, Hunter College and has spoken on endless panels . Anyone who has been fortunate enough to see this great woman in person can’t wait to see her again .

I first heard "Roxannes Revenge" on a bus going to a school skiing trip in 1984 and this kid passes me this tape and says "listen to this..then pass it up to the next seat" ....i put it on and i heard roxannes revenge (the version with Mr. Magic saying "OH MY GOODNESS" at the end) and i refused to pass the tape cause i was so blown away from it... she took UTFO's beat (first time i ever ever heard a diss song that takes the beat right from under their feet and rocks it harder) and flipped the hell out of it.

I still have that radio tape. i refused to let it go. it's great to see yer still alive and well...and successful in your own right. You still have the illest and most distinct  female voice in hip hop. Nuff respect.

Roxanne, that was a real pleasure to read a voice from the hip hop community that actually has something interesting to say.

I have to be honest when i saw the 'Dr' in front of your name i shrugged and tutted. I just thought here goes another idiot MC ego claiming themselves as the Prophet of some kind of lost knowledge. After im done laughing at those morons, it occurs to me that they perpetuate their own stupidity and ignorance onto others. The depressing thing is that it detracts attention to the studious and educational establishments that are worth paying attention to. Ah well its entertainment in one way or another.

Yeah well anyway, i was really taken in by your story and really respect that you have passed through so much at such a young age and to go onto achieve a successful course of study in Psychology and Criminology. I would love to pick your brain on sociological opinion. Crime and deviance and its psychological, economic and political influences. As well as ethnicity and cultural response.

Perhaps if you feel moved to , you could write some opinion and debate in your blogs. I do not have good net access at the moment but will endeavour to read through your site and bulletins when i can.

Ok just to wish you and yours my warmest and say adios............MRGO

C da Rican/ BRilliant Talent

I remember being 8 or 9.  I just came from Puerto Rico. My mother and I were sitting at a KFC (when we used the whole name)....in Spanish Harlem...I think 106th and 2nd or 3rd ave.

This guy walks in blasting his boombox......playing Roxanne Roxanne I wanna be your man. Kept it blasting too.  Damn I miss the old days..

Anyway my mother was annoyed by the sound that was coming out of the speakers.

Me, I was amazed by everything....the beat, lyrics, and the fact that this guy walked in a restaurant blasting his box and nobody said anything....

Mom wanted to leave but I begged her not to. I wanted to hear it all.

The guy looks around and I guess sees that people are annoyed so he turns it off.  I  jump out of my seat like "NO!!!!!  please turn it back on, and can you please play that Roxanne song again.

He looks at me and smiles and says OK shorty......

I ask him to turn it up and he blasts it even louder then before (man I wish I could find one of those old school  boxes now).....

KFC clears out.  Mom says we have to go. I say i'll be out in a minute.

My mother must of seen something in my face because she went outside and waited about 20 minutes for me....

While inside listening...the man is telling me this is Rap music and its going to take over the world.....

At the age of 8 I believed everything he said.  Who would of thought that he was right.  I have been hooked on Rap and living Hip Hop ever since.

Thank you Roxanne for making my life what it is today.

1.

Dr Roxanne Shante,

My greatest pleasure in life has always been watching the young talents who have passed through Power Play Studio in the 1980s blossom and grow into giants in the Twenty-first century.
I am so glad I stayed that Christmas eve to act as engineer and record your first record with Marley Marl and Mr Magic. You are proof that dreams can come true. We need more positive images of women in society and few woman have been as positive as you. God bless you and keep you safe on your journey.
