PIKE ROOM TUE 9/18 B-SIDE PLAYERS · Salvador Santana · cipes and the people · $10 · all ages · 8PM
B-Side Players have been spreading their message of culture, music and family for over 10 years now. The San Diego based septet led by frontman Karlos Paez, more commonly known as Solrak, was the son of a musician and spent a good deal of his time growing up on the road. He formed B-Side Players in 1993 in San Diego. The group built a local following and continues to win San Diego music awards each year for their blend of Latin flavored reggae, afro-beat and funk. The band has toured with artists such as Ben Harper, Ozomatli, the Wailers and Papa Roach. With SALVADOR SANTANA (son of CARLOS SANTANA!) and reggae from CIPES AND THE PEOPLE.
PIKE ROOM THU 9/27 HOLY FUCK · $8 · 8pm · all ages
Phzzzzz… crunch… thump…. crack… hooray!!! Holy Fuck makes experimental
dance music with drums, kid's toys, distorting mixers, bass guitars,
and archaic film editing equipment. With a current tour schedule
opening for !!! (Chk Chk Chk), Deerhoof, Wolf Parade, playing the John
Peel stage at the Glastonbury Festival and a resume of recent tour
mates including Do Make Say Think, Clinic, Mouse On Mars and
Cornelius, you would think Holy Fuck would be a household name by now.
Their reputation as a must-see live band is well deserved…
PIKE ROOM FRI 9/28 GOLEM · $10 · 8pm · all ages
Do you like GOGOL BORDELLO? Then you'll love GOLEM. They mix klezmer classics, Yiddish theater tunes, Balkan gypsy songs, Eastern European songs of home and homesickness, Yiddish communist choruses or Jewish and Russian crime and criminal songs. Add a rock drum set, a virtuoso violinist, a madcap vocalist and a sultry accordionist with sexy moves and you'll get why the band is taking traditional Jewish music into worlds beyond the bar mitzvah. "This is not your father's klezmer band … unless of course your father was Sid Vicious," says Jewish Week.
PIKE ROOM SAT 9/29 SMALL SINS · Freer · 7PM · $8 · all ages
Small Sins crafts a sincere and seriously catchy brand of electro-pop. It's definitely more pop than electro in nature, but either way, it spells enjoyable listening for folks like us. Recommended if you like the Postal Service or other Death Cab For Cutie side projects. Acclaimed locals FREER open.
EAGLE SUN 9/30 DEERHOOF · Frank Pahl · Mountain Ocean Sun · $12 · all ages · 8PM
RARE MIDWEST APPEARANCE! By turns cuddly and chaotic, San Francisco's Deerhoof mixes noise, sugary melodies, and an experimental spirit into sweetly challenging and utterly distinctive music. With Frank Pahl's Little Bang Theory: Frank Pahl and friends making quirky avant pop sounds with a table full of little instruments. Opening is MOUNTAIN OCEAN SUN, a new drone outfit from the His Name is Alive camp.
EAGLE THU 10/4 FUJIYA AND MIYAGI · Dirty on Purpose · $10 / $12 · all ages · 8PM
"They're doing for 70s krautrock and motorik what the DFA did for
early 80s electro. Indeed, without even being asked, they've gone and
done the unthinkable: They've actually made krautrock fun."- Pitchfork
Media
EAGLE TUE 10/9 THE AVETT BROTHERS · American Mars · $15 · all ages · 7PM
The music of the Avett Brothers is a mixture of old-time country,
bluegrass, pop melodies, folk, rock n' roll, honky-tonk and ragtime.
Listeners merely need one spin through an album to realize the breadth
and depth of the Avett's music. The only thing that is certain about
The Avett Brothers' future is that it will be filled with shows,
shows, and more shows. Over the past year, the trio have made known
that half of what makes them great are their live performances, which
have proven to entertain and enchant a wide, diverse audience. It's
the intensity at which the Avetts pour their angst, heartache and love
into each show that has captivated crowds across the country.
PIKE ROOM TUE 10/9 BESNARD LAKES · $10 · all ages · 8PM
Tantalizing music by the Montréal husband-and-wife team of Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas. A dreamy cocktail of West Coast harmonies, strings, and fuzzy psychedelic arrangements, their music is something of a
masterpiece that takes after the Arcade Fire's Funeral. Songs rattle around on wobbly guitars and shimmering electronic effects until they spill over in a big rumpus, driven on by a six-person band and five-piece choir. The group's main attraction, however, is Goreas, who has a softly sensual voice pitched somewhere between Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval and a wet, warm kiss behind the ear.
CROFOOT SAT 10/13 PINBACK · MC Chris · 7PM · $15 · all ages
Although it may seem like gentle pop music at first encounter, its brilliance is slowly revealed upon repeated listens. Songs are buoyant and lively at times, melancholy and dark at others, and always resonate with an underlying intensity. Between two musicians, Pinback lays out beautiful melodies that are deceptively complex, layering sounds and instruments upon one another and trading contrasting vocal parts with ease. MC Chris opens.
CROFOOT SUN 10/14 THE POLYPHONIC SPREE · ROONEY · the Redwalls · $20 · 7PM · all ages
With two-dozen uniformed members, The Polyphonic Spree is more like a small army than a band. True to its image, the Dallas-based group makes grand, symphonic rock with the exuberance of a heavenly choir. Plus Rooney: The young Los Angeles band Rooney draws influences like the Beach Boys and Weezer to craft its own promising sound. The Crofoot is pleased to host the kickoff for the Person to Person tour, with openers the Redwalls.
PIKE ROOM TUE 10/23 DAVID BAZAN · All Smiles · $10 · all ages · 8PM
Known mostly for his tenure performing as Pedro the Lion, songwriter David Bazan recently retired the band moniker to continue making music under his own name. Now he roars back to his creative roots, performing and recording everything himself in his home studio, while still expanding his sonic canvas. His signature songwriting, voice, and melodies are framed in layered harmonies, multi-tracked guitars, analog keyboards, and intricate production.
EAGLE THU 10/25 THE THERMALS · Thunderbirds are Now · $12 · all ages · 8PM
The Thermals are a three piece post-pop-punk band from Portland, Oregon, currently the main exporter of indie rock in the United States. Formed in early 2002, The Thermals signed to Sub Pop Records that fall, on the recommendation of Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie). They have since released three records on the label. The Thermals are probably most famous for their contributions to three-chord punk. Their crowning achievement came in spring of 2006, when they discovered a fourth chord. It's F minor, in case you were wondering. They are currently touring their heinies off, and should soon be recording a 4th LP, tentatively titled "One Special Enjoy". The Thermals were raised to follow a strict d.i.y (do it yourself) ethic, though lately they find themselves leaning toward a more s.e.d.i.f.y. (somebody else does it for you) lifestyle.
CROFOOT SAT 10/27 LOTUS · Unwed Sailor · $10 / $12 · 18+ · 7PM
For those waiting for a concert experience with the dynamics of a rock
band, the dance inducing rhythms of club music, and the sophistication
of modern electronica, an unlikely musical alternative has arrived in
the form of the band Lotus. Formed in 1999 at a Mennonite college that
had banned on-campus dancing as late as the 1980's, Lotus has since
spawned a massive following of fans.
CROFOOT MON 10/29 THE HOLD STEADY and ART BRUT · Federale · 7PM · $18 · all ages
THE HOLD STEADY will be celebrating the one-year anniversary of the release of Boys and Girls in America with an extensive U.S. Fall tour with Art Brut dubbed the "NME Rock 'N' Roll Riot Tour 2007." "We are super happy to be touring with Art Brut," said frontman Craig Finn. "I believe Eddie Argos to be one of the finest current lyricists in Rock. I believe he completely understands the place for both humor and honesty in Rock 'N' Roll." Since the October '06 release of Boys and Girls in America, The Hold Steady have proven their road-worthiness with almost 300 shows played throughout the U.S., U.K., and Europe. RollingStone.com recently included The Hold Steady in their list of "Top 20 Live Bands Right Now". Plus, the band's mind-blowing
performances at Festivals like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, as well as their sold-out club tours, shows that fans just can't get enough of them. Currently, the band is in the UK, where they opened for The Rolling Stones in Dublin and will headline the Carling stages at both the Leeds and Reading Festivals.
PIKE ROOM TUE 10/30 FILM SCHOOL · Land of Talk · Eulogies · $8 · all ages · 8PM
Not merely a wall of sound that hits you head-on, the music of Film School is more like a sonic galaxy that engulfs you from all angles. The listener quickly becomes immersed in this expansive hideout, enveloped by layers of reverb, loops, and the interplay of male/female singers. A driving, forceful rhythm section fuels a propulsive energy that gives an urgent quality to much of their sound; whereas other tracks convey a wistful melancholy, such as "Two Kinds", a heartbreaker of a pop song about lost love, or the deceptively subdued "Compare". It's the combination of ethereal atmosphere and strong rhythm that makes the album wholly compelling and promises a powerful live experience.
EAGLE SAT 11/10 GIRL TALK · $15 · all ages · 8PM
Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis) is back with his 3rd album on Illegal Art. With each release getting closer to his notorious semi-naked live show, Night Ripper is focused less on beat-f**kery and more on bringing heat to the party. It bangs as a continuous mix packed with wildly disparate Top 40 genres and eras. Current hip hop hits, soft rock radio standards, party classics, grunge masterpieces, R&B singles, glossy club-shakers, and rock anthems are all layered and pieced meticulously together into one non-stop celebration of pop and excess. Only Girl Talk's magical touch could please both dance-crazed teenage masses and mashup geeks with equal love. Mark Hosler of Negativland has declared it "a plunderphonics party record."
PIKE ROOM WED 11/7 DAVID KILGOUR · EUROS CHILDS · $10 · all ages · 8PM
As a teenager in the late 1970's David Kilgour and his brother Hamish, inspired by the independent do-it-yourself spirit of punk rock and the simple yet dissonant songwriting of Lou Reed and Bob Dylan, formed The Clean in their hometown of Dunedin, NZ. The Clean went on to become one of New Zealand's most popular and most respected bands. Their legend as one of the founding fathers of one of the most influential "scenes" in underground music quickly spread to all corners of the globe. Kilgour continues to receive much critical acclaim and is a bona-fide New Zealand classic. With the quirky pop of Euros Childs, former leader of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci.
EAGLE TUE 11/13 PSYCHIC TV · $15 / $18 · 7PM
The Eagle Theater welcomes the legendary PSYCHIC TV! Right from the outset, Psychic TV in turn made highly innovative and unflinchingly provocative music blending elements of psychedelia and dance with Industrial sounds (named "HYPERDELIC" by Genesis P-Orridge). As with Gen's previous endeavor, Throbbing Gristle, the details of Psychic TV's packaging, marketing and the radical lifestyle of the musicians were all treated as equally crucial components of the final aesthetic statement. Psychic TV created the template for the current avant-dance stance popularly labeled "Electronica" as well as having an undeniable influence on the emergent "Rave" culture. Counter Cultural provocateur Genesis P-Orridge and her reactivated Psychic TV aka "PTV3" will be releasing Hell Is Invisible, Heaven is Her/e, the first new studio album from PTV3/Psychic TV since 1995's Trip Reset
