Santa Monica is a long way from Tupelo Chart toping Americana artist Paul Thorn playing annual southern California event By B. Noel Barr, The Music Writer Dude Opening for Dave Alvin on the Santa Monica Pier Thursday July 30 will be independent recording artist Paul Thorn. Thorn, whose song style is steeped in south and brought to full flavor with his unique soulful rocking song craft,. Will be making his only L.A. appearance on the pier for the Santa Monica city weekly summertime concert. Random Lengths News asked Paul about his current, “We been playing the same shows for a while now, and every time the crowds are getting bigger. When we had 500 people in our audience last year, we have been getting 600 this year. We are in it for the long run.”Paul Thorn is definitely in for the duration, he and his band play 200 dates a year and have opened for such notable performers as Jeff Beck, Sting, and John Prine just to name a few. RLN asked him about had ever played with Dave Alvin before, “Yes, but I never have actually met Dave. I have played festivals with him, but I have always been in the process of doing the show and never really hung out him with during the festivals.”His independent Label has produced nine CD’s, “Each selling better than the last” he said. “When I started out I was on A&M Records, at the same time they were bought up by a larger corporation. That did not go anywhere and eventually started with my partners Perpetual Obscurity Records. I would recommend any artist start their own label; you will get everything that is owed to you.”Headlining the Show is Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women for the 25th Annual Twilight Dance Series that runs through September 3rd with the Patti Smith Group.
