teedo - you are my girl ep
(ICBM)
Three songs, with the first repeated as a fourth (but it is an edit), the EP kicks of with a strong Marc Bolan vibe, all T.Rex and electric, which is nice to hear. The tune shines with a little more current Weezer-pop friendly sounds, and a hint of dance-synth play in the background, but overall, I'm liking the glam. Song two seems to drift in a slightly more Killers-style vibe, but it's the vocals that take it towards different levels. I'm hearing a little bit of Shriekback, but that could just be the mood I'm in. The third songs switches again, into a hipster Rolling Stones groove that adds a little garage, but keeps the glam going. (myspace.com/teedo)

Teedo's 70s-influenced psychedelic rock stirs up a strong desire to go do drugs and play in the sun. Similar to The Stones and The Kinks but with a modern electronic twist, Teedo is able to smoothly blend various vibes into a solid rock song. Their creative use of instruments while maintaining a strong, traditional foundation creates an energy that bursts out even from their Myspace tunes. Teedo’s lead singer also experiments with his vocals, adding in quick falsettos and controlled cracks. Taking it a step further on a heavier tune, he busts out a deep voice with a morbid quality reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne, while the rest of the band jams out their metal. But these guys aren’t just about being rock-n-rollers. Songs like “You are my Girl” have a fresh pop beat that gets feet tappin’ uncontrollably, and multiple other tunes have a laidback, chillin’ out feel to them. Teedo’s music has a sense of being real but not sloppy, like a polished garage band. And their lead singer’s screams might even rival Frank Black’s. ....

Telegram Sam, are you listening? It took all five members of this Brooklyn ensemble to channel the late, great Marc Bolan - a.k.a. T. Rex for those of you under 40 years of age. On this all-too-brief EP, Teedo turns back the clock to 1973 with jaw dropping expertise by way of their crunchy metallic guitars, threadbare synth counter-melodies, bouncy bass lines, a firm back beat, and a vocalist who lisps, squeals, and enunciates exactly like the aforementioned god of glam. Don't despair, Teedo's self-identity occasionally rises to the surface in such cuts as the uber funky "Shut The Door On The World" and blue-eyed soul of "King of the World." Highly recommended for fans of Spacehog, and the rejuvenated Kula Shaker. Thanx fellas, got any more songs?

"Gotta stay awake to get ahead," chants Teedo Bilecky, lead singer of the New York based glam-punk unit Teedo, in the song "City." These words knowingly speak of those familiar restless New York summer nights. Teedo's sound is fitting as a synth-based jittery soundtrack to sitting strung-out on a rooftop while waiting for dawn. "Another Sound" begins with a minute long spaced-out guitar solo, followed by TV On The Radio-like anthemic vocals, creating a chilled-out stoner vibe that balances well with the amphetamine-fueled "City." Their 2007 full-length "Luvatomic" is aptly named as well. The album's mood embodies the sexy, psychedelic, gender-bending genre of rock music fashioned by David Bowie in the early '70s, but with an undeniably up-to-date twist. Check out Teedo's part-futuristic, part-retro funkiness on April 20th at REHAB.

You Are My Girl
by Mel Tickle
The problem for a lot of new bands surfacing nowadays is the development of real originality in their style. More often than not, another band will have got there first and exhausted a particular idea. So, it's often pretty risky to try recreating a sound popular 30 years ago and give it a new edge. Teedo are an international rock group based in New York who have done just this. 'Oh dear' I thought when I read the press release. But don't jump to conclusions; Teedo's sound is irresistible.
The E.P kicks in with 'You Are My Girl', a retro, unmistakably glam-rock rhythm that sounds straight from the 70s. The vocals scream Marc Bolan and the undulating synths give it an oriental feel - T-Rex in Tokyo! But don't think that this is simply a throw-back; it has enough modern hooks to still sound fresh. Of course the synthesizers add a new element, but the guitars grind out a raw reverberating distortion that mixes glam rock with a contemporary indie style.
And Teedo can do more than just vintage rock. 'Shut The Door On The World' brings the record up to date, with a funky bassline bubbling underneath a catchy pop groove to show pop-funk bands like the Scissor Sisters how it's done (ie without the camp cheesiness). 'King Of The World' takes the tone down to a mellow, chill-out track. Smooth vocals, dreamy synths and soulful guitar riffs mix to create an intoxicating blend of Sunday-morning indulgence after the Saturday-night high-jinks of the previous two tracks, without sacrificing the funky vibes that make the band's style so enticing.
Because Teedo's sound takes a little retro and mixes it with modern funky pop, I can imagine they'll be popular with a cross-section of different music fans - even the most die-hard rock fans won't be able to stop their feet tapping along to this. It's a bit on the pop side of the musical spectrum for my taste, but still - I love it!

Teedo - You Are My Girl / 2007 ICBM / 4 Tracks / http://www.teedomusic.com /
"You Are My Girl" is an EP that sets the stage for the band's upcoming full length, which should be out before the end of 2008. The title track blends together a very "China Girl"-era Bowie with a set of instruments that call together a rich array of influences. These influences include early nineties alternative rock, eighties "new wave" bands, and even a little bit of the instrumental side of the aforementioned Bowie. "You Are My Girl" has flashes of brilliance, but it still seems as if the band could reach another plateau. Perhaps the band's second track on "You Are My Girl", "Shut The Door On The World" will be what brings them up further.
The haunting melodies broached during "Shut The Door On The World", calling forth a little bit of eighties-era Clash even as the vocals hop from Bowie to Lou Reed. The track has a melody that is even more catchy than "You Are My Girl", but it seems like the stuttering, stop-start approach to instrumentation hinders the act from grabbing the brass ring. The final new track is "King of the World", and it is around a minute longer than the next longest track. Despite this longer runtime, "King of the World" is the strongest track on this EP. This is because Teedo are able to create a dreamy, strung-out approach to rock that shows them at their strongest. Even the seventies, Frampton-esque sound that they achieve at points during "King of the World" works to create a sound that will resound in listeners' ears for months to come. I would really like to hear the band's full length; I don't know exactly what they will be able to do, but at least it will be interesting to see them do it.

Teedo / You Are My Girl
The multi-national line-up of Teedo create an interesting sound. Lead track 'You Are My Girl' has a rhythm firmly in the glam-rock scene, determindly old fashioned sounding keyboards, vocals low in the mix and also a vague indie feel. It's good though, not shouting from the rooftops, but the melodies ( there's more than 1! ) get to you in the end. Impressive stuff. Of the supporting tracks, 'King Of The World's impressive enough, with quirky, drawn out vocals and brief bursts of glam guitar amid a dreamy atmosphere. ( reviewed 17.11.2007 )

'You Are My Girl'
- Label: 'ICBM'
- Genre: 'Rock'
Our Rating: 9 out of 10
Every month or so a CD pops through my door that really makes me sit up and take notice. This is that CD for December! Not only does the collage of photos of fans displaying signs reading 'You Are My Girl' make for some rather lovely cover art but the music on the disc itself is a bit special too.
Whether it's the whirlwind of keyboards and crunching guitars that lead you into the headrush-inducing title track or the thumping rhythms of 'Shut The Door On The World' Teedo ensure that you're kept on the edge of your seat for every single one of the 20-ish minutes that make up "You Are My Girl". This is what would've happened had The Killers and T-Rex written songs for fun rather than to make money.
No matter how you spend your festive season, you could do a lot worse than to have this keeping your stereo company.

Teedo are a multi-cultural group based in Brooklyn, New York, the band mix together a number of influences to create a sound that has been variously described as "Soulful Garage Punk" and "Glam Rock with a nod towards modern day dance pop" and according to my computer "Unclassifible" (which in truth is the best description I've read). The band weld together hard hitting guitars with a rattling rhythm section and shards of sharp twinkling snyths to create their unique musical vision.
As introductions go You Are My Girl ticks all the right boxes, there's a definite 70's glam stomp to the tune but that's mashed up with blasts of modern day spacey synth, distorted guitar riffs and glorious androgynous vocals, creating an infectious pop rock monster that one minute is both raw and sleek at the same time.
The B-sides are every bit as impressive, Shut The Door On The World is another groovesome garage pop stomper, whereas King Of The World see's the band step down a couple of notches and deliver a gorgeous shimmering slab of bliss-full psychelelic pop complete with intricate guitars, soulful synths and a combination of near falsetto vocals and lush harmonies.
Teedo mix and match sounds and genres to create a delightfully playful and original style that should find favour with even the most hardened music critic. If there's any justice in the world this single would top the charts across the globe, be play listed by every radio station and make Teedo into stars, but unfortunately we live in a cruel place and the chances are few people will actually get to hear the genius of this band, so make sure you don't misss out o n the opportunity and track this down now!

Teedo 'You are my girl' (ICBM).Okay the name mightn't mean anything at the moment but given time this multi national genre weaving collective may just in time prove to be a much needed fix on the hi-fi. 'You are my girl' is the Tokyo via Brooklyn 7 pieces debut release - a hot 'n' horny smoking street wise sassy uber soul bastard of a cut that taps deliciously into the headspace of early career Scissors Sisters and fleshes out the silken sophistication of the BDI's (nee Panda Gang) seductive Smokey obsessed grooves into a finger licking sub six minute mutant floor growler. Braided with a whirring array of sugar rushing 70's styled disco ball meets Wakeman / Rush keys, tightly coiled riffs hoodwinked from the arse pocket of T-Rex and blessed with imported west coast accents fed through the grooves of 'Catholic Education' era Teenage Fanclub and a vocal whose blood line traces directly back to Lloyd Cole, Teedo cleverly follow flight into aural arenas more readily occupied by the criminally overlooked Ambulance LTD as though transported into some strangely amorphic world that fuses soul / late night svelte disco aromatics and subtle shades of glam - quite possibly the sexiest thing in record world right at this moment. Flip side features more turntable tastiness in the shape of the tenacious twin set 'king of the world' and 'shut the door on the world' the former a key drenched smooching laid back slice of lights out MOR that sexily bucks and throbs like an all star studio shag fest between the Faces and the Stones while the latter a cool as f**k hip shimmying silken strut laced prowling babe bedded with effects laden crystalline new wave riff accents notched up to stun intensity. Essential in a word - perfect is another. www.teedomusic.com

Toxic Pete

Teedo are very hard to pigeonhole; dance-pop meets glam-rock - think Scissor Sisters meets T Rex and you'll start to get the feel of this superb sounding outfit. This single, 'You Are My Girl', with its aforementioned nuances and influences is fascinating and absorbing - a wonderful modern concoction of sound that fits nowhere in particular but could possibly sit just about anywhere! Grown-up glam-rock, sensible dance-pop, a stunning and quite massive sound that's wholesome, original and extremely pressplayagainable!
When I say fascinating I really mean it; Teedo grab you by the balls and when they've got your attention they just don't let go. 'You Are My Girl' by Teedo may have its retro influences but Teedo don't sound like anybody but, well, Teedo - they've got something very neat and extremely polished goin' on and I can see Teedo making a pretty big name for themselves if 'You Are My Girl' is typical. And, judging by the accompanying tracks, 'Shut The Door On The World' and 'King Of The World', 'You Are My Girl' is real straight-arrow, no-messin', down-the-line Teedo. For good measure they've also included here a 'radio edit' of the 'A' side - good value then? Oh yes!!
The pop world needs bands like Teedo right now - something that's sufficiently different and inspired to shake things up a bit, bring new light to the often dark and dismal tunnel that's 2007 pop music. Massively melodic and scarily different, Teedo bring commercial maturity and creative pop sensibility to the banality-ridden popular music world and it's a pleasure to experience their no-fuss take on radio-friendly pop-rock or whatever it is. Teedo could just be touting their musical wares at exactly the right time; with bands like Scissor Sisters and one or two others bringing some vitality and cheeky pop-ability to our doors, the timing probably couldn't be better for Teedo to take things just one small step further.
'You Are My Girl' by Teedo is great nu-pop; vibrant, fresh, entertaining and inspirational - superb stuff, great to hear, great to feel and great to be around - totally compelling!!
