Warning: You Can Get Pregnant While Pregnant

.glamour.com

I remember the first time JD's father and I were intimate after we discovered I was pregnant. He said, "Do you want me to wear a condom?" Now you want to wear a condom? Seriously? What's the point now!? Well, news flash: Apparently you can get pregnant while pregnant. After the jump, hear one couple's strange story.

Arkansas couple Todd and Julia Grovenberg were excited when they discovered they were expecting. Then they were shocked when an ultrasound revealed two heartbeats. Shocked because they were having twins? Try again. Julia and Todd conceived another baby while Julia was already pregnant. The male fetus was conceived a full two and a half weeks after the female fetus was conceived. Stories like this one and the fact that I got pregnant from the one (the one!) night we didn't use a condom makes me really feel for women who struggle to conceive.

So how did this happen? Dr. Nancy Snyderman explains this case of "superfetation": "Egg and sperm implant. Of course, that's your first pregnancy. But if you ovulate more than one time a month--and women do--and a sperm happens to meet that egg and they too implant, guess what: You get a second fetus."

Baby No. 1 is due end of 2009 and baby No. 2 is due early 2010. Congrats!

I wonder how often this happens?!

What's the craziest pregnancy story you've ever heard?

I have several stories though I can't say for sure if they count as "crazy". My best friend has two daughters with her ex, then after meeting her current husband she knew she wanted at least one more child. They tried for about a year with no luck...then finally she gets pregnant but has a miscarriage 7 weeks in - three weeks later she's still not feeling right so she goes to the doctor and she's still pregnant. The doctor told her it was possible that she became pregnant with twins and lost one while continuing to carry the other - she now has a perfectly healthy 10 month old boy.

Another thing that happened to my aunt's friend, freaked me out because I plan to have more kids someday... Crystal and her boyfriend had been trying to conceive for about six months when she got pregnant. She went in for her 20 week check up and the doctor was worried about the baby's size. They did an ultrasound and discovered the baby stopped developing after 12 weeks because the cord had a hole in it. They had to enduce her and deliver the baby that day. A year later, however, Crystal and her boyfriend had a little boy.

Another story involves my second child, Brianna. My ex-husband and I were told that I was due February 2, 2006. A c-section was planned for January 26, 2006 - mostly because it's my ex-husband's birthday. During the pregnancy I was in and out of the hospital because of abnormal tests, Brianna had an arrythmia and she wasn't developing as quickly as she was supposed to be. Finally on January 26th they get me set for delivery and I nearly passed out when I saw all the extra equipment set up in case there was something wrong with her when she was born. I even remember telling me mom how different this pregnancy was compared to my first - Jenna was perfect, the pregnancy was perfect (no sickness, no unusual cramping or pain, almost no fatigue, normal check ups, normal development) and no issues during delivery. I still believe Brianna has an angel watching over her - she was born weighing just over 6 lbs which is only unusual because she was still considered to be full term. The arrythmia disappeared within minutes, her breathing was normal and all her tests came back later that day to be normal. Today Brianna is nearly four years old and still perfectly healthy, though her father worries about her weight - the doctor said Brianna is perfect but petite. I think her father is just concerned that right now Brianna is a petite blonde with long legs and that someday day she's gonna be a teen.

that is the craziest thing i've ever heard. question: how does she only give birth to one and not both? if the womb is contracting, wouldn't both come out?

Well, it's not like it'd be all that dangerous to deliver the second two weeks early. Lots of babies have survived being born earlier than that......... so what's the concern?

Wow, I never would have even thought that could happen.
So, without reading the full story, this couple got a fertilized egg implanted to conceive, got pregnant, "celebrated" a couple weeks later, and got pregnant again on their own?

I think that's what I understood. Interesting story. :) I'm gonna follow the links and read about it... then maybe come comment back if I've been mistaken.

Interesting - if *I* were the guy I'd be happy, but also worried - Like Mess conjectured, I assume she would nto be allowed a double labor, meaning that possibly one of the babies would be born prematurely....although, a matter of weeks may not make that much difference....

I would still consider them fraternal twins.  Even up to one month difference there's slim chances that one baby would be delivered and the other one have to wait to be delivered.  It's interesting but I bet it happens more often than people realize.  My girls are identical.  They were from the same egg & sperm that split into two 2-3 days after implantation (they shared a placenta, had their own sac).  Twins just means that you're pregnant with two babies at the same time and this woman obviously is.

Actually that's the second time I've heard of that happening.

There was another woman not all that long ago who was on birth control and used condoms with a man and got pregnant. Then a few weeks later she become pregnant again still on birth control and using condoms. After she figured out she was pregnant, the woman went in for an ultrasound and it showed that one fetus was about 3 weeks older than the other

So not only did she get pregnant when she was already pregnant... She was on birth control and used condoms when she got pregnant both times

thats when they have to do cesarians both times to ensure the other baby can come to full term and they have to pull the first one out before she goes into labor to protect the younger one. technically she could have a vbac (vaginal birth after c-section) with the second child but because theyre so close to age she may not heal enough in time (even after a year it could be risky) so theyd probably just do the c-section the second time around anyways.
