Stumbling onto headlines like this makes my whole day.

Parasitic flies turn fire ants into zombies

Apparently, these tiny flies infect fire ants, move in and set up house...since they're parasitic and all, and naturally they eat the ant's brains.

The ant--without a brain--survives and walks around for 4 days.---until its head falls off.  I'm not really sure why the head falls off...but it's cool anyway.  Then the flies leave the ant host and grab one of his buddies.

What a great twist on the classic zombie story.

Of course there would have to be nanobots and an evil scientist bent on world domination...

Hmmm.

Aren't you glad you opened this blog today?

As always, don't take my word for it, click here to check the source.

You know I've been wanting to write something about this kind of stuff for a while. There are several parasites that actually control the minds of animals. Not to mention the different diseases like madcow and rabies that alter animal behavior. Who is to say that someday there might not be a disease that causes humans to attack each other like in 28 Days Later? Or maybe they'll discover a new parasite that causes humans to do this? That's similar enough to zombies.

It really isn't far fetched at all.

That's really cool, Ben!
I especially like the pill-bug parasite. He's like Dick Dastardly and Dr. Evil rolled into one.
