Blake’s Picks
Good stuff in the Valley and beyond. Go.

Kudos to the three Brew Works locations for their re-formulated menus that use organic produce from local farmers, food from producers that use sustainable agricultural methods and fair-wage practices, all-natural meats from livestock raised humanely and sustainably, Amish “FreeBird” free-range poultry with no antibiotics or hormones, and more. “We eat here every day,” said owner Richard Fegley, “but it’s not only that we’re making choices for ourselves here, it’s the ethical thing to do for all of our guests.” Rather than drag their feet like many corporate chains that are chiefly concerned with shareholders, the Fegley family have chosen to go with healthy, progressive initiatives over the years. Brew Works banned smoking in their establishments many months before legislation mandated and they were among the first in the Valley to go trans-fat free, pushing their suppliers to provide healthier items across the board. www.thebrewworks.com

GOOD ODDS
You’ve seen the 99.9 The Hawk $50,000 Jackpot Machine out at events and maybe thought, “Is it for real?” East Stroudsburg carpenter Troy Strunk can answer with a whole-hearted “Yes!” Strunk was recently presented with a check for $50,000 by the Classic Hits station after taking a free spin on the machine at Musikfest’s “Hawkplatz.”  He plans on using the windfall to pay for his wedding next June. 99.9 The Hawk claims that the 50k is the largest cash prize ever awarded by a Lehigh Valley radio station. www.999thehawk.com

MOONIN’ & JAMMIN’
There’s a new weekly rock and blues jam at Mezza Luna Sports Bar & Grill in Allentown. The Tuesday night “Half Moon Jam” from 8-11pm is hosted by long-time area guitarist Kevin Lang and his band Hired Gun. It’s a family affair with Kevin’s son Ben (of Blue Sees Red) on guitar and (ahem) showmanship, Kevin’s brother Dana on drums, and Ben’s BSR bandmate Tim Frank on bass. Sometimes Kevin’s oldest son Alex sits in on keyboards or sax. Mucho musical talent is part of the Lehigh Valley Langs’ DNA and it makes for a fun dynamic onstage.  Bring your guitar and join in. www.mezzalunabarandgrill.com

ROCK THE VOTE
Nominations for the 2009 Lehigh Valley Music Awards are being taken until this Friday at www.lehighvalleymusicawards.org. It’s your chance to recognize your favorite local musicians in a myriad of categories, and even your friendly neighborhood column in the area’s #1 music & entertainment weekly. I’m just sayin’.

HAGGIS UP TO HERE
It’s that time again: the kilts, National Highland Championships, pipe bands, pewter, pints, food, fiddles, and fairies. And, of course, the “Showing of the Tartan.” The 22nd Annual Celtic Classic is this weekend in Bethlehem. Maybe the best part? No admission fee for six stages of continuous regional and international entertainment. www.celticfest.org

DARK ART
If you’re like me and you like “dark” art, check out the work of Leonard Baskin at the Allentown Art Museum, now through November 8th. Leonard Baskin was a sculptor and graphic artist with a social consciousness and a high regard for humanity, despite the fact (or maybe because of the fact) that his images often reflected death and the frailty of man. His subjects were wide-ranging and often recurring:  mythological, predatory birds, Old Testament themes, and literary and artistic figures. www.allentownartmuseum.org

THE FLU…IN YOUR PANTS
There’s a “Swine Flu” app for your iPhone. True story.

“The ability to create is an integral part of the makeup of Man.  If a lack is encountered, it lies not in the ability, but in the scope of perception of one’s own creative ability.”
– Hunter S. Thompson  (In other words: You have it in ya, despite your doubts!)
