Who Gives Kudos:

Wednesday, April 05, 2006

The other day I was doing a background vocal session with one of my good friends and he brought CD of a song that he just sang on.  It was a new song by Kenny Loggins entitled "Dont Want To Hate You."  I've always had a great level of respect for Kenny's songwriting and vocal abilities, but after listening to this song one-time through I was simply speechless.  This song articulates feelings that I've dealt with in the past so eloquently that I have to share it.  The album that includes this song has yet to be released, so I'm not posting any audio.  However, I thought I would post the lyrics.

-Steve

I Dont Want To Hate You
Kenny Loggins

Verse 1:
I go to bed by midnight; I wake up again by four.
I read awhile then try to sleep some more.
But by 6 A.M. I'm gone again,
Lost in the logic of despair.
Cause you just cant reason with someone who ain't even there.

I've been right about the reasons,
I maybe right, but you're still gone.
Cause being right is getting nowhere,
And it's time for moving on.

Chorus:
Letting go of the anger,
I've been holding in my heart.
Letting go of the bitterness,
That's tearing me apart.
It's time to give us both the forgiveness,
I couldn't give before.
I don't want to hate you anymore.

Verse 2:
I loved you for your honesty, now I hate you for your lies.
Still I don't see the wisdom in goodbye.
So I put my fears in a letter of tears,
I guess I never intend to send.
The future is hard to believe in if I can't even see the end.

There are no easy answers,
It's just a fact of life.
You know somebody's always leaving,
Somebody's always left behind.

Bridge:
And day by day I'm getting stronger,
Ain't about you any longer.
It's about trying to save my soul...

Chorus:
And letting go of the anger,
I've been holding in my heart.
Letting go of the bitterness,
That's tearing me apart.
It's time to give us both the forgiveness,
I couldn't give before.
I don't want to hate you,
Argue or debate you.
I don't want to hate you anymore.

Great song... it contains the despair of the moment and the anticipation of healing in the future.

Kenny is quite a songwriter. Remember, this is the guy that wrote House at Pooh Corner as a senior in high school (while skipping his final exam, as I recall). And if you've never heard his album Return to Pooh Corner, you're really missing something special.

I'd love to know when the album is done, too.

thx,
c-

I agree with the above - this song could reflect the last couple years of my life. Going into the darkness caused by someone and coming out into the light okay without them, but portraying the extreme struggle in between. (Yes, please let us know when the CD is out.)
