From Bill Shumake: My name is Bill Shumake and I am working on a proposal to present to AFS/Austin Studios to create a small (5000 sq ft) studio that can be available to Austin area film makers (and possible photographers) at an affordable price. The studio would be a 50ft by 100 ft. well insulated metal building with 20 ft ceilings and a painted concrete floor. It could accomodate a good yet inexpensive chroma screen on one end (this would not be built with plaster but alternate materials that are far less expensive yet every bit as functional.) A building such as this can be built for under $50K meaning payments over 30 yrs would be in the neighborhood of only $300 per month before taxes and insurance. Maintenance cost would be minimal. The catch is that we would need land to build it on and that is where AFS/Austin studios come in. They have plenty of land for the facility. The land I believe is leased from the city, but either way it is there and could be put to use. I want to propose that the facility be funded much like a co-op with members paying a small monthly fee and then a daily use fee when they actually use the facility. Example: Members might pay $50 per month and then $50 - $100 per day when they are using the facility.
Currently studio space with a cyc wall at Austin Studios runs about $750 per day which is simply not in the budget of most local indies, yet we should be served by Austin Studios. Even the breakroom which would be ideal for auditions, goes for $150 per day, again simply too expensive for small budget movies. Many of us small film makers campaigned hard for Prop 4 to revamp the studios yet are shut out by the high prices charged for the large facilities. So . . .let's get a small affordable facility built. This will help Austin cultivate its talent. The next Rodriguez or Linklater is out there - this will help them emerge.
Currently I need to get an estimate of how many people would be interested in using such a studio given the terms described above. If this sounds like something you would be interested in drop me an email at wshumake@mail.utexas.edu with contact info (name, phone number, and email).
