The evening was luke warm and the usual attendees were as friendly as ever; especially some of the new faces that arrived for a night that was to be a plethora of screaming glitched out mayhem. The buffet was, as always, simple but ample and loaded with pounds of fat with no regard for health standards (which was fine by me). Cake, tortilla chips with salsa, regular chips, caffeinated sodas, a delicious array of soft cookies hot off the bakery shelf and popcorn which made Leslie (owner of Modified) jump for joy and rush past Terminal 11 to get a massive overfilled cup of her own. The headliners brought an assortment of merchandise, for sale like t-shirts, CDs, records, the usual stuff but at a cheap and reasonable price and if you didn't get any, tough, try to find it elsewhere I dare you! DJ CHARIS As a back drop to Charis's live set, the Quay Brothers dark and twisted film "Wooden Esophagus" was projected onto the wall through the duration of her performance, setting a mood for what I believe to be the spookiest breakcore DJ set I have ever been privileged to witness. Starting off with fluctuating low frequency tones that were seamlessly transformed into heart detonating breakcore beats which slowly melded into melodic rythems. TREASURE MAMMAL Complete with his Devo inspired glasses and his SP-202 sampler along with a rare theremin, tore up the plywood floor at the modified as he rolled on the ground in a spastic contorted manner completely ignoring all physical objects and audience members in his path. His 30 second to 1 minute happy electro tracks seemed to go curiously well with his ear piercing screaming... ON RED came on next doing live vocals along with some hot tracks he had cued up on an ipod. Unlike his compatriots, On Red's performance was more about emotion and clarity then floor breaking antics. GIRL TALK and his collage of early nineties dance music and IDM tomfoolery meshed well with his Miami beach inspired jogging outfit. His highly energetic presence was unforgettable as he nearly broke the sternum of Drex Rekker and another TTW participant as his shoes were sent flying towards them after a hyper active jumping jack routine. Stripped down to his boxers and covered in perspiration, Greg Gillis set ended with a duet with Frankie (aka Hearts of Darknesses), that involved aerial acrobatics and vocal chord tearing as they both climbed over each other in noisey bliss. HEARTS OF DARKNESSES' set was anything but mundane, in fact it involved more screaming and more energy then any one has ever seen at the modified. Girl Talk was backing him up on the laptop while Frankie was cocooning himself with the microphone wire in a violent beat bashing extravaganza that may never be matched by any celeb, IDM or otherwise. It was hard for anyone to shake off the raw power that the night left on them because never has there been a show at TTW that has yet come close to the magnitude of this Roman-like orgiastic beat explosion... If you missed this show, then you missed out... but hope to see you on the 9th of September for the next round..
