SCREWTOP DETONATORS

3, 2, 1…I'M DONE

OFF THE HIP

As a title 3, 2, 1… I'M DONE beguiles the true amount of effort screwtop's have put into the album. The homegrown four-piece, who now reside in Melbourne, have come of age with the LP release, showing some exceptional skills as songwriters as well as being great players. They have thrown out the cookie-cutter and the sound presented here bares little resemblance to that of the young lads many remember as stelwards of the pub rock scene. While it's a definite departure from the live ballsy rock sound that's associated with the group, the production on 3, 2, 1… I'M DONE serves the songs well. The songs are robust and could have lent themselves to heavier production, but the softer touch brings out a side of screwtops that might have been lost with a different approach.

God knows is a stomping album opener and the album continues in a similar vein up to track five, Walking, a dark but heartfelt, quieter moment that's complete with cello and glockenspiel. Anvil shatters the mood before the swampy blues of On The Run brings in an alt-country vibe with slide guitar and some subtle string arrangements. Be Around has a straight up pop-punk canter and while its likeable, but brief, song, it seems a bit of a throw away track and is one of the weaker moments on the disc. The closing trio of songs really makes this release, STD features brilliant Motown R&B bass line and horn accents, while the Hellacopters inspired rock of Nothing Up My Sleeve and Transparent close the album on a rockier note.
