That sounds like a ridiculous statement, but I hope I can make it so. I'm sick of doing shows for the sake of doing shows. When you're an unknown band, it's tempting to play any show with anybody, anywhere, anytime. But have a little self-respect!
I know we all have to pay our dues. There's nothing wrong with playing for free if you genuinely want to. I happily play for free when I'm sharing the stage with someone I admire, or playing at a high profile club in town, or offering my music to a worthy fundraiser, or entertaining friends at home. I'm not so happy playing for free when it involves transporting my keyboard long distances or disorganization and interpersonal drama. I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to realize this.
In case you're wondering, this post has been brought to you by a wonderful show experience, not a lousy one! May there be many more... I'm willing to wait.
