Hey Friends,
Chop Suey 8/13/09 We had a really good show a couple weeks back at Chop Suey. Jim, the sound man from the original Crocodile Cafe was the sound guy, so good sound guaranteed, the rest was up to us. Times being what they are, I think we've run out a different line-up for 5 consecutive shows, the constants being myself and Matteus. So it's been interesting and different every time!
For this one we had original BSC drum ace Andrew on the kit (third show w/ us in over 2 years, practices in that time: zero. Scott "Skin Richards" Johnson played percussion. Andrew and Scott had never met prior to sound check, and I Showed 4 new songs (easy ones) to Andrew during the sound check. It helps when you have that psychic connection form years of playing together.
Also, you may know that bassist Stacey Lester, has left the band, we had an amicable split. When you are done, you are done! So Matteus has been playing more bass lines pizzicato style on his instrument. The 5 string electric cello is a versatile instrument! So our sound is evolving again. (If anyone knows a bass player that might want to play with us drop me a line!) We had our typical bumps, but for the most part the energy and focus were high and it went over really well. I think spontaneity gives the live performance a lot of energy, you have to be in it!
We played with Coulter, Romance and a touring band from Nashville called Mother/ Father (who I think ended up with my good guitar stand!!!). Fans and friends declared that Coulter reminded them of the Smiths, Romance reminded them of Joy Division, and Mother/Father, U2. All in a good way. And I noticed a number of our fans hit the merch table after their sets.
Chai House 7/12 Our next show is at the Chai House in Ballard, it will be more acoustic oriented w/ myself, and Matteus accompanied by Skin on percussion, hand drums. We'll play two sets and be able to play a lot of material. I like multiple sets, with a typical 40 minute set it seems like just about when you are really hitting it, your time is up. The show is FREE and the Chai house also sells alcohol, however after 10 PM (when we start) the place is no longer all ages. Sorry to the kids, mine wont be happy to hear that, it's after their bed time anyway!
The Central Saloon Friday 9/25 We go on 1st on a Friday night in Pioneer Square and have an hour long set to deliver. We'll be playing electric, with my old friend Jason Hatch playing bass with us. Jay is working out great so far and is a welcome addition to the band. Skin Richards of Samurai Bow will be playing drum kit and of course myself on electric guitar and vocals and Matteus on the electric cello and vocals. It'll be a mix of old and new material. Also on the bill are Afraid of Figs who lace their pop rock with a good dose of humor and The Mother's Anger who have connections to our pal Jack Endino and to the MC5, nice! Thanks to Justin Roeser for suggesting us to Afraid of Figs who asked us to play this show!
While a lot has changed since then, the first show I ever saw at the Central ended up being pretty historical, Mother Love Bone opened with an acoustic set with The Fluid, Mudhoney and Soundgarden on the bill in 1987! And I played there the first time myself with my very first band The Somethings in 1991. Maybe some of that old mojo is still in the floor boards. I have advance tickets available for this show so if you want to save a couple bucks at the door contact us! Shanty Tavern 10/10 Third time is a charm! Our first attempt to play here was snowed out, second time no one showed up to open the bar that night! And we had a good sized crowd shivering in the parking lot. We say let bygones be bygones and let's do this thing! While some had said "never again," it looks like we still have a soft spot for this venerable neighborhood road house. So it's going to be BSC plus Samurai Bow, Matteus and "Skin's" other band with singer songwriter Jerry Mitchell, plus a special guest third act.
