Things have become a little wild lately. I mean this is summer in Tallahassee and traditionally all our guests go home and we have the town to ourselves. We usually just loll around in the heat or go swimming and stay out really late. Because it kinda, just kinda cools down at night when there is cold beer to drink and your friends to hang out with.

Our guests are people from all over Florida who come to Tally for one reason or another and then usually haul ass and never look back once they get done with their four years in school or government.

To be blunt, some of you are lousy guests. You come over and just bitch about how Podunk we are and how everything is so much better at home. You trash our place and leave.

We clean up and do it all again because what makes it all worthwhile is that each time we meet some people who appreciate us and our hometown.

Some of you think we are assholes because we make jokes about you and basically make fun of everything you think is important. That's how we cope with bad guests.

The good guests get adopted and we cry when they leave.

What kind of guest are you?

I moved to D.C. immediately after leaving Tallahassee. I couldn't handle D.C. proper and wound up moving to Arlington VA, which is still in the D.C. metro area, but shares the sort of "southern-not-southern" flair of Tallahassee.

I came here, found my version of Leon Pub (Dr. Dremo's), found my version(s) of All Saints (Murky and Javashack), found a million little amazing biking trails.

I'm not really sure what it is about D.C., but on any not-busy night, you will encounter much nicer service industry people than anywhere in Florida. People want to know your name, want you to come back, want to talk shit. I'm not sure why exactly, maybe the pace of the city, or the northeast, or that people respect the non-tourist population more, or maybe since everyone here is a short-timer (much the same way everyone is a short timer in Tallahassee), there's no reason to sweat the small shit.

Anyway, all that is to say that I thought I was an OK guest, and about the only other place I'd ever experienced the above level of friendly homliness was at All Saints.

After shucking everything I own up the east coast up here, the girlfriend I followed moved back to Gainesville, and now I find myself really missing my time in Tallahassee, when she was a quick car ride away and coffee was available any time I wanted it.
