Current mood:  cold
Category: Music

i just typed this in a mail to someone who was asking me what the deal is. I managed to sum up my feelings pretty well (the can of wild turkey and coke helped) so i thought i might as well repost it here, for anyone else who wants to know what's up.

music... mang where do i start. I just feel like i have tried EVERYTHING already and none of it works. I've done the solo thing and couldn't get a line up to play it. I've done the "band" thing in the past and had people start dragging their heels just as we were getting offered free studio time to record an album and stuff like that. I have tried the "play in someone else's band and just be the guitarist" thing and because i didn't take hold of the reigns and make things happen, nothing did happen and it was a total waste of time. I have tried the "play in someone else's band, but be the guy who makes things happen" thing last year and after 3 gigs people start showing up drunk. At the same time i was writing new stuff and offering it to people to sing on, and no one came through. Also offering to learn other people's songs and play live with them, and they can't even get their shit together enough to send me mp3s to learn the songs.

even before the band went to shit at the end of last year, then youv'e gotta deal with bookers who wait until 2 days before the show to tell you "you have to bring your own engineer" or PA or whatever, which you asked them about 3 months ago and couldn't get a straight answer. Not to mention trying to deal with
people in other bands to try and get a gig together... "yep we'll do it... oh no we can't do it anymore"... etc.

basically now when people tell me they want to do something with me, i just don't even fkn believe them anymore. I think "yeah, i'm gonna spend 3 or 6 or 12 months practicing my arse off for this, and then you're gonna screw me like everyone else has". People jsut aren't for real mang. They're SCARED that if they give it 100% and when they get there it's not everything they hoped for, they're not gonna know what to do next. Instead they just make sure they never get there by only giving like 25% action and 75% bullshit.

I mean sure... if someone would come through with the goods on drums, we could go play some of my solo stuff... but to who? There's people better than me doing the instrumental guitar thing and not pulling an audience. It would be different if i had a few projects and just did a "dave" show once every month and a half or something, or do shredfests with steve and conrad maybe... but mang i just don't see the point anymore. The amount of effort i have to put in to play at a level i am happy with is not worth it just to deal with disingenuous people and get nothing back for the effort i put in.

wow what a rant. Are you sorry you asked? lol

yep, that's pretty much it.

nah... all my electrics have been boxed up and packed away since before xmas. just being a bedroom / internet guitarist doesn't appeal to me, the idea was always to get out and do some shows but unfortunately anything that relies on another human being having their shit together is always more trouble than it's worth (or just impossible).

Music is not about being rich n famous or Being known by 100's or 1000's of people as That "Awesome so n so" from that band "blah blah" its about doing what u love and doing it to ur full capasity and what ever follows..... follows....
even if u just play a few gigs in a tiny stingy bar/pub supporting some hopeful wana be "someone". Music is about Passion, creating emotion and atmosphere through sound.. "The universal language." You wont give up..... u cant.... its who you are its what you do.. to quote the guy from "Almost Famous" its about finding that one guy in the crowd thats not getting off...n making him get off.... (even if that guy is you)

luv ya always

i completely agree, and that's pretty much what i've always said. Fuck all the "i want to be a rock star" bullshit... i always just wanted to be in a good band that wrote some good songs and did some good shows and worked hard to reach the best of our potential.

I think i did a good job of proving my work ethic / commitment and showing some of my potential with my solo album 2 years ago, but that was only because i didn't wait around for other people and just got stuck into it and said i would do whatever it takes to make it happen. Which is why i had to learn to play keyboards and spent about a year programming drums because no one else would do it.

I've just never managed to find enough like minded people to make a FULL band of it and do the shows. Without doing live shows it's all pretty pointless.

i don't want people to think i'm all depressed or anything like that, because i'm nto really. Just over music/people + bored because i now have about 5 hours a day to fill that i'm not spending on guitar.

Hi Dave,

I read the above a couple of times. Although I don't relate to how you feel I understand WHY you feel that way. You know I love your playing and I think if you stop it will be a real loss. However, I also think it would be a loss if you pushed on doing something that wasn't making you happy. Life is too short to waste time on things that don't satisfy you. So although I would LOVE you not to stop playing I will wish you all the best with using that time and energy to do some other great things instead.

Steve.

no one is listening

What are you going to do? Take up knitting?

I think you should move overseas. There's plenty of serious muso's in Europe and America with a much larger audience base. A very good friend of mine moved to London a few years ago and hasn't stopped working since.

You only live once so what have you got to lose?

Considering you already live in the music capital of our country, there's nowhere here that's going to be any better.

Get packing son.

:)

Ah shit man, that's not good news. Maybe you should indeed move overseas! Give Will Calhoun and Muzz Skillings a call.

I need to update my myspace page.

Ah man that is demotivating. I suppose you could try selling your time as a guitar tutor, and then not only would you be getting paid to have people play guitar with you, you might even find some teenagers who still have dreams and are willing to put the effort in (while they pay you to teach them how to play guitar better!)

Hey Dave, remember me? We used to occaisionally talk on OzProg.

Man... don't give up playing guitar. I loved your solo album and I think you're a fucking talented player. If band members can't be assed jamming with you or gigging with you, that's their fucking loss. My band (Metallurgy) was in a similar situation as yours last year, with members preferring to go out and get drunk instead of practice etc. Whatever it comes down to man, you're a creative muso and I enjoy listening to your album, so don't fucking give up! Just be a one-man band if that! They usually go down well.

Anyway man, hope you're well.
