Current mood:  melancholy
As some of you may know, I do not work outside of the home.  For the last year or so, I have been the full-time caregiver for my grandmother, who has Alzheimer's disease.  It is, without a doubt, the hardest job I have ever had and ever will have.  Not only is it physically exhausting, but it is heartbreaking to watch this woman that I love so much - the woman who raised me - slowly slip away.

David Hyde Pierce, who happens to be one of my favorite actors, is a tireless advocate for Alzheimer's research.  Here is a great interview he did with CBS back in September, where he discusses the far-reaching devastation of this disease and the urgent need to find a cure.  (You can read the print version of this interview here.)

..

Someone once described Alzheimer's as "the long goodbye," and I can't think of a better description for the disease.  If there's anyone out there reading this blog who has been touched by Alzheimer's and would like to talk about it, please feel free to contact me.  I am always interested in hearing from anyone who shares my experiences.

P.S.  Special thanks to my sister Mandy, without whose weekend respites I couldn't survive.  I love you!
