Current mood:  disappointed
Category: MySpace

Just recently I was sent an add request from a 21 year old female who claimed to be a fan of my music.  She was very sweet and very attractive!  All the things that would make you want to talk to someone!!!  We talked several times about my music and how she could go about buying an album.  Come to find out the person was lying the whole time.  They stole another person's pictures from myspace, photobucket, and a bunch of other hosting sites.  They had friends made up too!  The entire Top 8 was a group of friends that were not "real".  They would leave each other comments and had lingo and everything.  The photos were of "real" people, but the person and story behind the photos were not.  I was contacted by the real person and a number of her friends, and over a few days I finally realized that they were telling me the truth!  I was talking to some who was an imposter!  Needless to say I was freaked out and shocked that someone would really do that.  I guess I'm a bit naive.

My point is: Don't trust what you see on Myspace.  Myspace is a great tool for keeping up with friends, business networking, finding great music, etc.  But be smart about who you talk to!!!  Just because they seem sweet and attractive doesn't mean that it's "real" or safe!  I know I've learned a lesson and I hope that this blog helps in the case of the actual people that I've encountered.

thats one reason my friends list is mainly people I know in 'real life' and bands I dig....  Its sad when a site made up for networking is used as a way to decieve people...  Do they get some sort of sick thrill out of it or something I wonder?

You know, I was actually a victim myself. Pictures of me were TAKEN from somewhere and used to create a pretty degrading page about me....so yes. Be careful. There are, EXCUSE ME, a lot of SICK FUCKS with way too much time on their hands.
Thanks Bub

yeah, I've been approached by profiles that are fake. It really bothers me, so I just don't respond anymore.  This is not cool for socialites.

It is rediculous the links people will go to.  That is why I keep my profile private and ignore all weird requests.  I choose to meet people the old fashioned way.  In person:)

Wow! Someone goes to a lot of trouble for what??? That is crazy! I was contacted by a made up person too, but when I went to the profile they had no other pics then the profile pic and no friends. Kinda got my attention,so I called them on it and I never got another message from them. But to go to the trouble of making a whole profile with other peoples pis,I don't understand why. By the way,I am a real person.LOL

You're so right....be careful folks, especially you KIDS.  Networking is a beautiful thing, and I've done quite a bit in the past few months...great music, great new friends, found some old ones.  Is a man a real man if he is over 30 and still asks to see pics of your tits????  (I think not).

hmm this makes me wonder..
are you really an attractive musician
who plays the acoustic guitar like there is no tomorrow
and has an amazing singing voice
or some imposter, who took all these pictures
from another artist??

kidding.
GOOD ADVICE

too bad you never really can tell when they are fake or not.
[unless its painfully obvious]

Beware of people in real life too... Remember all the neighbors said Jeffrey Dahmer was such a nice and quiet good neighbor to have!!!

Yes, this is so true. I have learned to look after some special details to find out who´s right or not. But you never know. So, i don´t speak about private things on my space.

You need a good sensitiveness to know who´s right or who´s fake.

thanks for adding this. I convinced my 12 year old daughter that having a myspace page can be dangerous sometimes...and here is an example for her. She was very upset that she couldn't have one at first but then after seeing this blog - she understood...so thanks!!

Wow - that is unbelieveable! I didn't think that anyone would go to the trouble of doing something like that!!! Maybe I should bold that warning to stalkers at the top of my blog...
Thanks for sharing your advice - I think I'll be a little more weary of strangers from now on.

Sometimes i wonder about this whole myspace thing... It seems that it has been replacing meeting real people in real scenerios that REAL life has too offer... So sorry you had to experience that... Deception truly damages the part inside of you that believes in the goodness of people doesn't it... So sorry...

Hey..this is such a great contribution to anyones blog space...I think Im going to add it to the bulletins for my myspace friends......
I want to encourage everyone who is reading this..to always wait a few weeks...before you accept anyones invite..if you are suspcicious at all....the add freind list will turn to big X and say deleted most of the time if its a hoax..I never add people with friends less than 10 (unless i know them) and skeptical with friends over 10 less than 100....
The picture issue im afraid is just something Our culture is dealing with not just on myspace but at the mall , in rest. at concerts and theme parks,,,,WE are a camera camera society...video, cell phone cameras, web cams and street corner activated traffic cams....I was at my sons basketball tournament about 5 hours from here in a very remote part of california...we were sitting in the hot tub(@the hotel) when several of the other team members came in and the coach and his assistant showed up later with the assitant toting his video cam..taking photos of my son and I as tho we were unexposed to the politeness of asking if we minded? Also moderators of sites that need to pretend that they are someone they arnt is another red flag.....I have had this same revelation, where others get power from being in control of others personal lives accepting and not accepting invites because of a popularity thing? Its bizzare........Life really is like this out in the real world because I have met people and looked them straight in the face listened to their stories walked away and thought intutitively., they are full of Themselves.....and knew without a doubt ....CON ARTIST...so yeah., its here on myspace its our world we live today...pray up , put your armor on ask the Lord to always give you a clarity and sense of intution that is trustworthy so you will not walk into the trap...We cannot cower and NOT use our resources for the good things that were given and intended...IF we lived like that than The bad GUY always wins...
Thanks for a great blog and can you let me know if you mind that I insert into my bulletins page....I think awareness is everything..pam

Someone stole my pics and created a myspace of me...only it's not really me. I have tried to get myspace to remove the profile but they never have...sooooo frustrating.

Thanks for posting your experience :)
