Who Gives Kudos:

September 11, 2009 - Friday

Category: News and Politics
I was running along the waterfront late yesterday afternoon, when I spied the KOIN 6 Local news van. My friend, and former news anchor, Anne Jaeger just started working for KOIN again, so I figured she just might be in the van. So, I made a detour over to see if I could find her.

She was indeed working yesterday afternoon, and she immediately asked me if I would go on camera and answer a couple of questions she was asking people on the street. I declined, only because I had been running for an hour in the 80+ degree heat, and I looked like it.

However, I did ask her what questions she was asking people. One of the questions was, how did the events of September 11th, 2001, change the way you view life and live your life?

I looked at Anne and said, "Anne, my answer to that question is so boring. It didn't change my views at all." And it's true.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I have always lived my life like I'm on borrowed time. We all have a finite amount of time on this planet, and the truth is that none of us knows exactly how long we have. So you can put everything off until "things get better," or you can put nothing off and live life like this minute is your last.

The events of September 11, 2001, were tragic, and my heart goes out to the people who lost their lives and lost loved ones. I was lucky enough to visit Ground Zero last November. This is my 2-minute video.

I think many of us live our lives the same way.  Every day is special and there is plenty to be thankful for, especially just knowing that we CAN pass our time the way we wish.

Good clip.

Thanks for the video, you look so cute in your hat! ; )

You had a good answer to her question, not much surprises me anymore either but it does make me feel lucky to be alive. God Bless all the victims and heroes always.

Yeah.  What you said.  (I almost got started with a rant, but fortunately I realized it's your blog.)

Who Me?...

I remember that morning like it was yesterday. I was watching CNN when suddenly there was a news flash that an airliner had hit one of the towers. I canceled everything for the rest of the day, and my buddy and I sat here and watched the entire thing, I watched the second airliner hit, live.

I think it did, change my thinking a little.  I always thought we were untouchable. Now I'm no different. And I'm just a little more aware of what's going on around me. I was always a little more aware than the average person, but it was a little different after that.

I agree about the untouchable part. Terrorism was always somewhere else, not in the U.S.

I was in Orange County about to get on a plane that afternoon to fly back to PDX.  Stuck in CA for three days I finally decided to drive back.  Years later I was in England and about to fly home when arrests "thwarted" an attack.  The start of no liquids onboard flights.  I had to cram my laptop and briefcase into an already full suit bag that could be check, as nothing could be carried on.  Could not even buy a book at the airport to take on the plane. That was a long flight.

I don't think my view of the world changed after 9/11, but I do sense that my annoyance with ignorant people has increased.  So much money has been poured into various efforts to make our lives "safer" that are just illusions of safety.  When the nation panics at reports of a low flying plane in NYC, or "shots fired" on the Potomac during CG exercise, it saddens me at the lack of true confidence we have in ourselves.

What really saddens me though is that we have weaken the foundation of our own house, trying to kill a cockroach.

Wow, so nice to hear your voice!  This is a whole new perspective on who you are.  I do remember where I was at that tragic moment.  I do think that day should have changed your views a bit.  I think it actually did.  Why else would you have made this video?  The trip to Ground Zero last Novemeber? You were already headed there for some other purpose???  Hmmmm....

It didn't change how I live my life at all. It changed my views on thinking I was so far away from terrorism.

I made the video because I made a lot of videos when I was in New York. And I had a great creative partner and editor at the time.

So do think the new building will be complete in the next few years? I hear conflicting reports.
I enjoyed this video.

the event-images in my life that made the greatest impact:
seeing pictures of the rockets aboard ships heading from russia to cuba during the cuban missile crisis
the assassinations of john kennedy, martin luther king, and robert kennedy
a monk self-immolating and a kneeling man being shot during the viet nam war
shun fujimoto's 1976 olympic rings routine
mother teresa completely surrounded and adored by the poor in india
ryan white, dying of aids, speaking to a packed gathering of luminaries
the destruction of the world trade centers
the aftermath of princess diana's death
the devastation of new orleans by katrina
the acceptance speech of barack obama

as i revisit the poignancy of life's select moments...and scores more flood my unreliable brainpan...i understand how my sensibilities need refinement to a level that feels slighter ripples in the pond
