To me that is the question... Having observed the interaction on our site alongside the interaction with our myspace page, I have concluded that most, the majority of filmmakers have a selfish streak. This is not intentional I believe, but it does mean they remain in the same place. As tacky as it may read, team efforts succeed far more than being insular in you dealings.

Filmmakers need to support other filmmakers! if you are entering any type of contest that relies on the votes of others as well as fellow contestants, then MAKE the effort to watch their movies and VOTE. Don't just canvas people to vote for your movie. Canvas them to enjoy all the movies and then Vote. This will show a demand to the commercial side of the film industry, fostering sponsorship support which trickles down to the filmmakers.

Here is something else, and i know its not knew, there are many funds out there, but because of our reputation and integrity, we feel we could actually benefit filmmakers by having a simple fund set up.

I am on two sides of the fence with this one. On one hand, you would have to trust the fund organizers to have the presence of mind and tastes to select a worthy project to develop with the money raised. This is rarely the case. Most "funds" are self serving.

However, imagine a fund where its not self serving, apart from the admin % to actually pay the people to WORK on the development, the money would go straight to the development of a project selected by our committee.

Our committee includes the former Executive VP of Miramax, the Head of Acquisitions for Focus Features, and of many more powerful individuals who we cannot name. So, say you start supporting each-other, each donating $1 or $10 or $100 or whatever, and we raise a respectable amount to develop one of those filmmakers features, then isn't it worth it? The chance to possibly be selected, or at least the chance to support another filmmaker? Is there something wrong with this thought?

Let me know if you think The Director's Cut should put in place its "DONATE TO FILM FUND" link on our site. Let me know your thoughts. Would you Donate?

How do YOU support other filmmakers...?
RetroJoe

Actually, I have thought the same thing before. It isnt always easy to find money to make a production, I think that this is something needed. Hope to see this happen.

I do support other filmmakers, but not blindly. I need to know the person or persons if I am going to intimately support them and thus put my reputation (albeit small) on the line. The people I've worked with over the last three years are all in my database and I often distribute information I come across that might help them. I do agree with your point about rallying troops to "vote for me" as opposed to rallying them to "come see some interesting indie films" is counterproductive to the overall indie film movement. However, the industry (both Hollywood and indie) is amass with unsavory folks, schemes and plots. I would be extremely reluctant to be a part of any group chartered to donate money to an entity for the purpose of  rasing money to develop "one of those filmmaker's features." My feares would be like donating to charity where, there are administrative  overhead costs of 20-30% of the amount donated.

No thanks. I'd rather chat with folks and form my own tight-knit group to support each other and raise capital, if necessary.

Thanks for your input. Of course administration fees have been a bone of contention... we are thinking 10% maximum...

Kudos to encouraging community support and interaction!  It is sad that though the importance of this should be obvious, it is not always acknowledged or embraced.

Regarding the question of funding, I am in line with those who say their willingness to donate would be based on the specific organizer or organization.  Being very open about what is received and where it is distributed would validate and encourage confidence in the process.

Interesting post.  :)

I actually do agree that the film industry is very selfish...why? b/c you see the same directors, writers, producers, actors...making movies. After a while the industry becomes very boring. The film industry should be more willing to welcome new arstist because it makes them look good. I have not been to the movies since feb., I can go for years without going to movies. Seeing 2-3 movies in one year is a good year for me. I am 25 years old...this is my generation year for films, yet I do not see any films that interest or relate to me as a generation next. I could keep going.
