Current mood:slim thuggish
i figure instead of answering tons of e-mails, if you got any questions ask me right here...it'll probably kill two birds with one stone...so, what's crackin'?
and let's keep it to questions, please don't make personal statements, promote your shit or answer questions other people are asking me.
thanks...

also: check out the FAQ's right here...i've answered allthese a million times so jsut read this here if you think you're about to ask a typical question.

What equipment do you use?

- A turntable, monitors, and an Ensoniq ASR-10 Sampling Keyboard.

What sort of records do you sample?

- For the most parts its just random records I get from dollar bins.

What sort of influences do you have when making songs?

- This is gonna sound odd, but I honestly don't think in influences. When I make a beat I just sit down with a shit-load of records and listen for samples and work from there...the beats basically kinda go in their own direction. I never sit down thinking "I'm sad today. I'm gonna make a depressing beat." The records dictate the direction I go in...no candles or incense... I basically just listen to samples...when I find one I think I can work around I add drums.

How do you make a beat?

- I record samples into the ASR-10, where I do most of the sequencing. It then gets taken to an engineer running Pro Tools (I don't own or operate Pro Tools) to get mixed. I add a lot of shit on Pro Tools and all the effects are from Pro Tools. But the basic skeleton is from my ASR. I'll add like a sample or two on Pro Tools but only cause I'm out of banks on the ASR. Sometimes I'll have live guitars and drums.

Are you coming to my city on tour?

- There are no current plans for touring, but I will post tour dates when they are available. I don't decide where I go either, that's all up to my management.

Do you have to pay sample clearance?

- Ninja Tunes takes care of it when needed, but my samples are for the most part fairly obscure and I stay under the radar as far widespread exposure goes so most of the time it is not an issue, although its is becoming a bigger one now a days

What do you think of…(insert music equipment)?

- I don't know anything about any equipment, hardware or software, except for my ASR-10 so I can't give you a good answer probally.

How do you do a live show?

- I do sets using Ableton Live. It's just me on a laptop basically. I have an outline that I improvise within. Basically, the skeleton keeps it all the right length and in case I do fuck up, it can't get that out of hand. But it's like live sequencing pretty much. I only use Live for performing though, not for producing.

When's your next album coming out?

- Uncle Tony's Coloring Book will be coming out sometime during or after Spring this year. It will just be a limited release in the U.S. only (which is kinda how I saw the project when I initially made it) and it won't be on I-Tunes. So everyone has to go and actually buy the CD. Support sampling!

How much do your beats cost? Can I get one?

- While individual prices vary, they are all over $1000. I usually only do beats for people that I'm friends with, but if the price is right I'm down. If one is so inclined they can hit up my manager at gabe@gdhmedia.com..he'll fill you in on details on that kinda shit.

Did you have anything to do with the Music By Cavelight music videos?

- No, that was all done by other people.

Why didn't you sign with Def Jux?

- When I was shopping around Music By Cavelight Jux already had RJD2 making instrumental albums so I figured they didn't need two of us. I sent it out to a bunch of labels and Ninja Tunes got back to me and the rest is history.

Do you ever rap?

- In the early 90's I did, but I realized I was whack at it so I focused on producing.

Why the name Blockhead?

- I got my name from when I used to mc. I have a square-ish head. It's that simple.

Will you listen to my music and give me feedback?

- Sorry, but no. If I listened to yours I'd have to listen to everyone's and I don't have the time to do that.

Do you have any advice to help me start my music career?

- It's a lot harder now then when I started out to make a career out of this. It's good to try and follow your dreams, but you have to be realistic about it at the same time. To make it you pretty much either have to A) Come up with a rapper (like me and Aesop) or B) Know people in the business.

How did you meet Aesop?

- We met at Boston University.

When did you decide to pursue music professionally?

- I was at Boston University for a year. I kinda knew it was a doomed attempt from the jump cause I was always hating school. So, I figured I'd save the money and just drop out. I was in the general studies program so I was studying nothing in particular. The choice to pursue music was kinda all I had. That or work in a bakery the rest of my life...

Do you have a regular job?

- No, I haven't had a job outside music since 03'

What type of music do you listen to?

- Mostly old school rap and some other random stuff. I don't listen to much current rap or instrumental stuff.

What are your hobbies?

- Watching TV, playing b-ball, eating, and drinking vodka.

Do you regret making the blog?

- It's a mixed blessing at best.

i use an asr-10 to make the beats and other peoples pro tools. i'm kinda equipmentaphobic. i like to work with what i know..which is a sampler that is out of print. when i tour i use abelton but that's only for touring shit...on the new album i have one song with live drums and mad live guitars. the first album had lots of live guitars. courtesy of my man damien paris from this rock group the giraffes. they're ill...he's a lunatic...as far as me, i don't play an instrument. the asr is a keyboard so i've learned a little piano styles but that's about it...i'm drunk...

Haha, erasin' my shit, wtf. lol.. Nah, i got your message. I was just wondering why you didn't release that 'random old beat' .. But that's probably a obvious answer comin for that .. even though I thought that was great. Somethin' else I was wonderin is how much throwaway shit did you get on the last album an this album? Like how many tracks did you make an axe completely?

the "random old beaT" is actually available on itunes.com but outside of that, it's pretty..uh...random.
i do have outtakes from the new album but all of them are gonna get released on the vinyl version. i make tons of beats/ nothing is really a throw away to me...i have over 300 beats just kinda sitting around...

Thanks for doing this Q&A thing, i think its quality when artists take their time to do stuff like this. Anyways...

When did you decide that you wanted to make a real go of music? Was their one key event?

Do you have a favourite beat/track you have made, instrumental or with an emcee?

by a real go, i imagine you mean like try and make it my career? if that's it, i quit working in december 2003. but in 94 ,when i dropped out of college, i pretty much had nothing else i was good at or enjoyed doing so i started working on my music then.
hmm..a favorite...hmm...i like sunday seance alot. i'm not one of those guys who hates my own music after it done. i'm pretty happy with most things i've done. except my breakbeat album. that shit was very bullshit.

my parents wanted me to get an education but they were also realistic in that they knew it wasn't gonna happen. i was bad in school MY WHOLE LIFE. it's not like i was getting a's and then all of a sudden fell off. i never studied, i never did homework. only thing i was any good at was some creative writing but that was when i was like 16.
as for the mc's with degrees, yeah, sure, some have college degrees...some don't. i'd say more don't then do but i could be totally wrong.

you say you have all kinds of beats just lying around...i'm assuming this is because you just make them because you like to make them..but do they end up laying around because they don't fit in with the theme or feel of the album you're doing?  also, do people ever commission you to make beats for them or is it more of a thing like with aesop where people you like to work with will come over and give them a listen and you'll let them use it if they hear something they really like?

well, i have mad beats cause i really don't make beats to be on instrumental albums. i make them for rappers first. so i make mad beats just cause it's what i do. they end up laying around cause no mc's pick them. but there are so many it'd be hard for them all to get taken. but yeah, basically i give mc's beat cd's an they pick them.

jer is a professional master of all trades.
the peter pan song is a weird one. it was one day when we were recording and i came down with the flu. i was out of it so jer just smoked some weed and went into a room and recorded it himself. he came out oocasionlly to ask me what the little prince wears..i was like "what are you doing?" but eventually he come out with that song and , suffice to say, it was fucking nuts. so, i'd say weed and boredon ispired that song.

I might leave you the f00k alone with all of my questions soon hah, but I wanna see if you can give me some advice. I love the hell outta music, and I wanna fuck around with it but I'm working a shitty minimum wage 9-5 right now. So, it's hard to just bust out some money for some music equipment. When I get there though, what do you think perfer getting? I might wanna screw around with DJin alot, but I've always had ideas for beats I'd like to implement too. Just really have no clue where to start with this shit, all I have is ideas in my head. No clue even how to use any of the equipment either.

i'm a bad guy to ask about equipment. all i know is the one sampler i use. an asr-10. it's old and it works when it wants to. but it's all i've ever had and it's the only thing i know how to use. i don't get too deep with equipment. i find sometimes having too much equipment kinda waters down what you do. it gives you too many options, if that makes sense. i like the idea of woking within the bounderies of one machine. and using that to it's fullest extent. oh and i'd say make beats instead of djing...but that's just cause i make beats and don't dj...

Ok coo, thanks Block. I think I get what you are saying about all the equipment. Somethin' like that happend with my big bro, getting shitloads of equipment then he ended up selling it. He's gonna start over again, but keep it minimal. I'll start checkin' on my own for some coo equipment options. I'd like to get a pair of two technics but eh that whole dj and/or beat making thing is still gettin me right now. I'd like to learn how to do both. I'll see what comes up first an just try the two. Anyway, thanks for the advice.
