Current mood:  accomplished

Victoria’s final match this past Friday on Smackdown officially brings down the curtain on an era.

Her departure was the last of a group of women who collectively raised the bar in women’s wrestling. A time when of the core players that made up the women’s roster, 9 of them were champions, 6 of them becoming champion for the first time, second time, etc.  During that time we saw the introduction of new characters and the reinvention of others, good guys and bad, each offering something different than the other – a flavor for everyone.

I guess the era formally began when the then defunct Women’s Championship (since the departure of Chyna saw the title and her reign as Women’s Champion come to an end) was brought back and put up for grabs at Survivor Series 2001.  The match was called a 6-pack challenge and it involved almost all of the women on the current roster all of which were wrestlers.  Sure, some were more seasoned than others, a few were even former champions, this match also featured the debut of a new woman to the roster – and that’s exactly what made it so interesting and entertaining.

Slowly from that moment on, we worked as a group to wiggle our way onto the show every week, even trying to grab a spot at the pay-per-views if we could. We used every chance we could to show the fans that we could do more in that ring than just flaunt ourselves – although we never forgot what brought us to the dance – it was all a carefully crafted balance.  The annual Diva shoots that ended up producing the magazines, videos and TV specials gave us the assist when it came to delivering the T&A to our fans, while we got to focus on delivering another form of T&A to the fans – talent and ability.

Over time certain things started to fall into place for us that helped elevate our status on the show from novelty act to eventually being an integral part of it. Obvious things helped like the fewer occurrence of matches that involved substances like gravy, mud and 1 square metre of fabric and, the fact that we started to have matches that lasted longer than 3 minutes! Every bit helped, the storylines that we were given to develop our characters, the occasional opportunity to interact with the main players like Vince, The Rock, Kurt Angle, Triple H, Kane, Steiner and Austin - all helped to make the women officially part of cast  – we were no longer just ‘extras’.

But at the end of the day, it still came down to delivering the goods; after all, it is a wrestling show. That’s where attention must be drawn to one of the biggest factors that made this era what is was.   Dave ‘Fit’ Finlay – you know him by his famous line “I love to fight!” – Well, he made us love to fight and he made you love to watch us fight.

Originally assigned to the women’s matches as a rib from management, Fit took on the challenge and embraced it. He saw the opportunity to create something special, with a little TLC and a collective effort, Fit lead the charge on churning out some of the most exciting, innovative and entertaining matches ever seen from women in the WWE.  He helped us develop stories in the ring that enhanced our storylines so that it would eventually culminate to a pay-per-view match – just like the guys.  He brought out the best in us, paying close attention to the individuality of each character, reminding us constantly that ‘this ain’t ballet’ – so that we would go out there and bring it each and every time we were in the ring.

It is the most active time ever in the history of the Women’s Championship.  Just as an example, from November 2001 until Lita’s retirement in 2006 the championship changed hands 18 times between 7 women – that’s a lot of action and a lot of women kicking butt!  We saw a lot of firsts – a chair shot and a cage match - and a lot of things that normally didn’t involve women like going through a table and hardcore matches.  We were even featured in the Main Event of Raw – a spot reserved for the biggest match-up of the night. Even the women who were not title contenders played an important role in forming this group that redefined the role of women in wrestling and who embodied the then newly-coined phrase ‘WWE Diva’.

Like Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman of the Chicago Bulls, or like Cindy, Naomi, Claudia, Christy and Linda were the ‘supermodels’ of the 90’s, I’m proud to have been part of a group that defined an era, a time that is hard to forget and even harder to duplicate.

And so goodbye and best wishes to Victoria.  You were part of a special time that brought joy and entertainment to millions - a toast to the widow’s peak freak!

It was a great run … it was an honor to have run with you.

I have to agree... her retiring marks the end of an era. An era I was proud to witness and be a part of.

This indeed marks the end of an era. In the time where you had WCW closing its doors and then an "Invasion" of the WWE (F at the time) You had the divas becoming more than just eye candy, you had women that were not only HOT but that could get it done in the ring. I for one miss those days. It's not as though we dont have anything like that now (Beth Mickie Melina Etc) but it just seems as though it doesnt mean as much. Back in 01, You wanted to see Trish give Vince that Low blow cuz he deserved it or Lita deliver the finishing moonsault cuz Steph cheated to get the strap. Now, it just seems as though the though process isnt nearly as in depth as it once was and its sad. Fans arent into the Divas as much as they once were because there are really no storylines that grab a fans attention and draw them to it.

Goodbye to Victoria who will always be respected for going from one of The Godfather's former ladies to a WWE womens Champion.

Well wishes and thanks for the memories!

Same here. I just don't want to believe that she's already retiring. I was hoping it was just a storyline or something of the sort. After all I remember their being rumors that she was retiring soon but she never mentioned it so I didn't want to believe it. I still believe she has been under utilized though too.

Trish this was a good read. I wish you, Lita, and Victoria were all still wrestling in WWE. Also I've always thought Fit Finlay was cool. This just shows how cool he really is. I wish that some day I could meet you guys and Finlay too.

About time she retired. Don't get me wrong I love Victoria and I appreciate what she's done, but she has no reason to hang around this long in WWE by the way she was treated and had no competition. She was in the company a bit longer than needed, all the divas these days are only models, with a 3 exceptions and 2 of the 3 aren't even shown on TV. Have a great life and Kudos to a great choice Victoria.

He could have worded it better, but he's not too far off the mark. Womens wrestling and the Women's title meant something in the era from about 2000 - 2005. Now it's gone back to being a T&A show and trying to figure out which Diva will be in Playboy next. (By the way total respect to Trish for opting out of the Playboy thing.
)
Granted, there are 3 or 4 really talented women wrestlers, there just isn't the same passion, and for that matter the same backing from creative that used to be there. The women's division has unfortunately become a bathroom break again during the programs... And mark my words, you will never see a Raw main event with any combination of the current Diva roster.

OMG Trish!!! you basically confirmed to what i was thinking... Victoria was the last "REAL" Diva.. But in my own opinion, the WWE Diva's no longer mean anything since you guys left, not to chasitize them but it's a joke now.. You guys could actually carry a show. I basically went out and bought the older WWE video games with all you guys in it, the current roster yeah they are cute but that is all other than natalyia who can wrestle and michelle mccool.

Although I do love the talented divas of today, it was the woman of the early 90's that brought respect to the division. You ladies paved the way for the stars of today and made the Moolahs, Wendy Ritcher's and Mae Young's of the past proud. It's a sad day to see another great diva walk away.

Wow Trish, thanks for your unique perspective on the revolution of women's wrestling by your generation of WWE Divas.

Since its early days I felt the establishment of the Divas division and evolution of women's wrestling in WWE is (was?) the single biggest improvement in North American pro-wrestling this last decade. I'm glad to say I was there every step of they to see all your stars rise: you, Lita, Victoria, Molly, Jazz, etc., and to see you and Lita become main event players in WWE. The original crop of Divas was something really special.

I was in Madison Square Garden in 2002 for your first Hardcore Match with Victoria and it was a fantastic eye-opening performance from both of you. Besides the first Elimination Chamber that's the match I remember from that show.

Sad to see Victoria depart and truly mark the end of that golden era. I think the wrestling content of the current Divas division continues healthy with Beth Phoenix, Melina, Mickie James, Michelle McCool, Katie Lea, and Gail Kim coming back, but it's not the same. Will they be given the same time, care, and attention? Will this generation of Divas fight backstage for their spots the way you did? Hard to say, but I'm rooting for them just like I rooted and still root for you and your peers.

Your right, your 100% right.I remember watching the era when i was younger, and I loved to fact that women can wrestle like the guys and With the guys! The release of Victoria confirms that those days are dead, and now the girls are going to have to work back from sqaure one, which is just being something to look at.
Though i know that a very very small few can,is sad that i have to watch the process alll over again!
And I will miss Victoria! She deserved waaaay better than what she got!But I'm happy that she is going to be happy.

The addition of the Women's Championship/Divas to the venue only made it that much worth watching! I was starting to grow alittle tired of seeing the same ol' thing on WWE, the along came you ladies, the greatest avenue they could've taken to attract more fans as well as fans of ol'. IS was an honor to have spent all this time with you ladies, even if only our time together was spent while you preformed and we as fans watched.......Thank you Trish, Victoria, Sable, Chyna, Lita, you ladies certainly paved the way and raised the bar for future stars!!!

Seeing Victoria depart was very emotional. She was the last original kickass divas. And yes this is definitely an end of an era. The Divas Divison will never be the same again. You, Victoria, Molly Holly, Jazz, Lita, Torrie Wilson, Ivory, Jaqueline, Nidia, Jackie Gayda & Sable all brought something different to the table and made it work. We will never forget the great entertainment you all brought us.

You took the thoughts right out of my head. I remember within that time frame of November 2001-2006 the Divas Storylines were the ONLY thing I would really follow in the WWE. I would watch JUST FOR THE DIVAS. All of your hard work showed through, and it definately shows now more than ever because the Divas today cannot live up to the standards of what used to be. I am however proud to have witness every moment of that era. The greatest era in Women's Wrestling in my eyes.

Thank You TRISH! and the rest of the divas a part of that era.

WOW, she left too?! First you, then Lita, now Victoria. I stopped watching wrestling when I was 18. I started watching it when I was 8 and I have to agree with you about the women stepping up. Back in the day when all they were, were valets, now theyr'e one with the guys. It's sad to hear that Victoria retired as she was one of my favs. but I guess these women are stepping down so that the new faces can step up and fill in their shoes.

Well said Trish.. thats the perfect way to said it.. :)

Victoria retirement only mean that its the End of an Era of the best group/batch of WWE Divas...

you are the group that put the Women's Division on the map.. and for me the Attitude Era is the best Era of all time.. cause you show the world that Women can be a part of a Man's World.. that Women can be as Great as a Man in their own field.. you made Wrestling not only for men.. but for women also.. that women can excel and can be a MAIN EVENT.. you showed us that women can do whatever man can do in the ring..

Victoria is the last WWE Attitude Era Diva.. now with all of u gone.. it will never be the same..

you are the Greatest group of Divas that step to that ring.. as you said it.. you've done it all..

THANKYOU Attitude Era Divas for many wonderful years of entertaining us..

love you lots.. and im gonna miss you all..

I agree, But yet I think that you ALL got out at the best time. Wrestling in general is getting worse. Better looking young wannabes with half the talent. WWE has Beth Phoenix and Natalie Neidhart and maybe Katie Lea as Legitimate Divas That could give any of Trish's Era a decent match, all others are disappointing eye candy. And lets not delve into the Men and dispiccable storylines. I, like you Trish, Wish Victoria the best. Hoping to see ya on RAW again soon.

Very well written, Trish. I'm sure most fans couldn't agree more. The last three wrestlers that made the womens division an *actual* wrestling division are now all gone. I have a friend who hates the womens matches because of all the botched spots, he will do anything to not watch them during a PPV. I thought fur sure he'd be elated over a diva retirement. When I told him about Victoria leaving, however, he was visibly upset and replied "Oh no, she was one of my favorite wrestlers, among all the men *and* women..."

I agree Trish! Her final match was a great effort against Michelle McCool. Her goodbye speach was brief but heart felt.
Her speach can be watched on WWE. com.
She was a warrior among the women. Even Michelle McCool wrote a blog that was really out of character and that was even a little emotional. I have to admit I miss the videos being made all though I have some but not all that showed just how beautiful all the Diva's are out their wrestling atire. I must say Victoria is still an amazingly beautiful woman outside the ring. she had a great run in WWE, I think she was 3 time Women's Champion. We all will miss her and hopefully she can make an appearance once in a while. I even mentioned to her that maybe a legends Diva Match at Wrestlemania between Trish and Victoriacould happen but I here the rumors that Trish might face Michelle McCool. Only rumors. But I never say never.

I feel a bit silly as I wrote a long response on your WWE Universe blog.
My bad! lol

But seriously though I thought the era that you were in Trish was the golden time of Womens Wrestling. It started when you first won the Womens Championship at the 2001 Survivor Series (I was on vacation in NYC at the time so saw it live at WWE New York - I jumped for joy when you won!), and there was the foundation with you, Lita, Ivory and Jacqueline to name a few. Then as time went by Jazz, Molly Holly (fresh from being Mighty Molly), VICTORIA and Gail Kim to name a few more entered the frey and of course I cannot forget the amazing efforts of Finlay who helped bring the division together.

There were indeed a number of firsts as you rightly mentioned. With all due respect to the current flock of WWE Divas you and Victoria were like the dream team. You showed some ass but kicked some ass too and I always enjoy watching my videos and DVDs featuring those amazing matches. Thank you Trish and thank you Victoria.
Victoria certainly wasn't the lady to mess with!

The Women's Division had it's peak that is really missed now! There is quantity but not quality on the roster. With the departures of the great ones like u Trish... Lita...Chyna..Ivory...Jackie..etc. the tides have shifted.
With a few exceptions, the Division has become more about model looks and less UNIQUE character development! It's the end of an era indeed but it will come back stronger one day :-( Till then we have the net to indulge out taste for classic Diva matches of the past! Be Well Trish and know that u are still loved and appreciated for helping to raise that bar! We miss u and thanks for the Blog!

Hey Trish!

I have a question, of great importance! I've heard you mention Finlay in previous interviews etc, explaining what he had done for the womens division in WWE.
What I'd like to know now is who the hell replaced him? They need firing ASAP!

I'm currently studying Creative Writing, my dream is to work on the creative team for the WWE, idealy I'd like to work with the divas. There are so many ways the WWE could take SOME of todays divas, and then there's the odd few that shouldn't have been given contracts in the first place. Luckily most of them are being shown the door one by one.

Now my dream is hanging in the balance, with only 2 years left till I graduate I'm wondering what state the womens division will be in then...

All the "Greats" who I had dreamt working with have left, Victoria being the last of those. The era you, Victoria, Lita, Chyna, Ivory, Molly, Jazz created will never be replaced or duplicated. I think that was the top of the mountain as far as the WWE divas are concerned. I pray that I'm wrong! But I've decided not to chase my dream anymore.
