Coyotes on the Prowl
As he trotted across the meadow, he paused to listen to his pack mates howling up on the hill ahead. He would soon catch up with them, but had been side-tracked by a rabbit he thought he could catch. As he approached the family group, he was relieved to see that supper was already on and there would be plenty for all.
Everybody was busy saying hello. A few of the youngins were splashing in the creek. Just being together put everybody in a good mood. When he made it to the top of the hill, he heard somebody say, "Hey, if it ain't Storytellin Bill."
He watched as Bill meandered his way into the group, and after some hearty hellos, Bill began: "Did you hear about Cuz?" Now several of the gals perked up their ears since Cuz was a real favorite among the ladies. "Yeh, he is headed to New York City.
"New York City?!" cried old Hicker-nut Jones in disbelief. "What for?" Nobody had expected that kind of news about Cuz. What in the world would an old Homegrown coyote like him find appealing about New York City.
"There is a performance artist in N.Y. who wants to spend a week in an apartment with a coyote as a form of protest against the war. He offered Cuz a lot of money for one week's work. So Tony went with him to keep him out of trouble."
After the laughter had died down, Bill explained that the coyote is one of the few truly indigenous creatures of North America. The coyote is therefore a fitting symbol of the common people. And what more fitting representative of all that is native to this land than ole Cuz?
What would Tony and Cuz do with a whole lot of money?
