if you live in forsyth county or surrounding are i encourage you to stop by the garage to sign a petition to "save our music". the city is proposing an ordinace that would would cause many small venues like the garage to hire off duty police for it's own security. seeing as how small venues such as the gargage are barely able to fiscally survive they could not take the financial strain that this ordinace would put on them. we have discovered also that these music venues that would be affected by the ordinace are not even the cause of most police calls or disturbances and that the city is going about this the WRONG WAY! there has even been a proposed "violence reduction plan" from these local venues in response to the citys concerns. this violence reduction program is a much more rational way to go about addressing the issue of violence in our city. it states that the local venues will conduct training sessions with their empolyees on how to conduct themselves if an altercation shoud occur. will the city listen to us? YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERNCE by signing the petition at the garage. go there during the hours they are open- they will know what you are talking about and, believe me, it will mean a great deal to them and all winston salem music lovers!
thanks peter spivak- the author of "save our music"

NOW YOU CAN SIGN THE PETITION ONLINE! GO TO: www.petitiononline.com/spivak1/petition.html

if you ever go to see music or play in a group that would ever perform in winston this effects you! the wording of the ordinace is vague and in addition to having to pay for extra security every show must have an identified "promoter" that would have to purchase a $50 liscense. SO if you are a band from greensboro that comes to winston and plays a show and make $200 at a show you might have to pay $100 for security fee- $50 promotion liscense- and after giving the sound guy $50- well you see where this is going. winston would become a musical ghost town!

My boyfriend and several of his friends are musicians in bands based out of Winston-Salem. This is a big deal as we have already seen a decrease in the numbers of places that any band can play with the closings of such places as Ziggy's. If this ordinance goes through, it will most definately affect our local music talent. PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY!!!

Well, how clever of them. It takes time and money to actually understand a problem and reaching a conclusion in what would be the best way to adress it. It's way much easier just to put your foot down and grab a hold of the first idea that comes swinging along and voilá, you look as though youre very decisive and powerful. Politicians seem to have been pro the idea of trying to mute creativity for as long as there has been protests against their ideas. If you want an open society, based on mutual respect and understanding - there must be room for people to express their ideas.
The day you silence the artist is the day you fuel the bonfire of prejudice.

Besides, I cant recall ever being prone to violence because of listening to music - I almost feel agressive around some politicans though....
