So we have been recording a new album, a full length in fact. We want our debut album to be something people will be intrigued by (obviously) but we want it to ultimately be a launch pad for better albums. A firm foundation, if you will...and if you won't...well then, suck it. Sorry that's a sidetrack. The goal is to release an album that is good and allows us a lot of room to go in other directions without hearing the typical "their first album was awesome...then they got weird/terrible".
We have already knocked back 5 recording sessions since mid July, 4 of 5 of those sessions have been vocals and 1 session being guitar. For me (David) I get to sit seemingly idle watch these sessions with input when I feel inclined. I have already done most of my recording on my own due to the awesome technology that is software synthesis. So what do I really do when I am sitting all alone? I observe. That is what this journal will be. My observations.
Colby has made amazing improvements with his singing, in virtually all areas. His expressions are stronger, his pitch is better, his range is broader and his understanding of where his voice should fit in the song is more clear. He is on his way to becoming the vocalist on our recordings he is on stage. In one of our song "This is Punk Rock", Colby had always nailed the vocals live due to his energy on stage but initial recordings were much weaker but when we took him into the studio and he recorded the latest version it was explosive. When I hear those vocals I definitley feel proud to have his voice represent our songs.
Initially HiCap Records was interested in getting our album out by Black Friday however as recording went on we've realized that is not a possibility. This has freed Colby up to experiment with each phrase of music and figure out how his vocals will meld with the song. It is very exciting for me to watch him work on our songs because for the better part of our musical lives together I have been supreme dictator (the Rover Random days) and he has just put enough effort to get by. Now Colby is excited about our songs and the freedom I have finally allowed to give him, and he is using it to his advantage.
The songs we have fleshed out have turned out as good as we could have hoped but we are reserving the harder songs for the end, so it will be interesting to see what direction they go in and what happens to our mood. I will try to get demos up asap, but the music world may evolve at an alarming rate but getting things done is as difficult as ever.
