Working on some new things, still pretty much failing at C64 music, Game Boy stuff seems to feel so natural to me now. It is hard coping with the uncontrolable beast that is the C64 after being able to get so finickety with LSDJ. I guess I'm also intimidated by the many great C64 musicians that have been around for the past 20 years or so, knowing that I'll never be able to create something interesting or different.
I listen to a lot of Game Boy music and don't feel like that at all, so much of it sounds so hollow, empty and unemotional to me, even though there are 48 favorites this week and 32 of the comments are congratulating the creator on sonically opening their heart up. I've never bothered to listen to much Game Boy VGM and I never had one as a kid, so maybe that has something to do with it.
I should probably stop looking at 8BitCollective so much as well, but it does seem to be the hub of the current Game Boy music scene. You just have to shift through it all and seek out artists like Kraettz, peeR, Zabutom, J.Arther Keenes, Meneo, Qwertypak, Uoki-Toki and Silent Requiem who all take it far beyond the advertised on teevee cheesy as fuck hard trance and bouncy octave basslines with simple nostalgic melodies and delve in to something a little more interesting.
Anyway, you should always concentrate on making music that you like and the
new stuff is turning out to be a nice floaty wobbley electro mix of DMG-01, bass guitar, Yamaha PSS-470 and Roland PRO-E that is turning out to be a surprising melodic space out.
Also on the happenings are the ongoing improvised spaced out synth colaborations with
MFU and we should have an underwater themed record coming out soon.
