Some musicians spend their spare time and money looking for instruments - with me, it's always been records and as much as I love to sing, playing a big box of wonderful 45s to people is pretty hard to beat.

Depending on the situation, I'll play some soul, funk, blues, rhythm & blues and gospel - usually a mix of all of these.

Now THAT is a pretty damn impressive set of 45's my friend. And I'm fairly ashamed to say I only know about 8 of 'em! Someone round here has got a lot to learn...and it's not you!

Hey Man,

You got yourself a very cool collection... I reckon I never heard most of the stuff on your list, but if it's just like the stuff I HEARD... you got some BOSS shit !!! Ha Ha

Uncle David (Evans) recently gave me a coupola copies of the rare 45 he made with the "Beale Street Jug Band" (w/ Hammie Nixon, Miss Zula Van Hunt etc.) on Jug Band records...

It features a great version of "Mr. Crump" on the A side and "Tappin' That Thing" -feat. Hammie- and "Dudlow Joe" -feat. Miss Van Hunt- on the flip side...

It was recorded at the Sam Phillips Recording Service on Madison Ave. in the early 80's, but it sounds like sumpthin' outta the "Sun Records Blues Box"...

Stan Kessler and Roland Janes used the old Ampex 300 machine Sam brought from the old Union Avenue studio to record it... It was released in 1982 and the version of "Tappin' That Thang" is not the one on Hammie's album for "High Water"

Another killer single he gave me is a VERY rare copy of the Monroe "Guy" Jackson on "Rustron Records" ( an Holly Springs-based company) with "Got The Boogie Woogie Blues" and "Lonesome Home Blues"...

The 45 was released in 1985 but could have been recorded for RPM in 1951... Jackson is playin' some mean guitar he sounds like RL's dad... I can get a second copy, if you're interested...

I can also have lotta 45s Unca Dave produced for "High Water" back in the days...

I'm gettin'rid of bouncha stuff...I have a fantastic Lightnin' Hopkins EP on "Brunswick" (Decca stuff) with "Merry Christmas" / Happy new year" on the A side and "I'm Wild About You Baby" and "Cemetery Blues" on the B side...

U.P. Wilson - Mean Old Word/UP EXPRESS (Boss guitar instrumental !!!)) Pee Wee Records
Uncle Ben -Mama Look At Sis'/Mean Woman Blues (Laura Ann) - High Water
Bobo Jenkins - Nothing But Love / Tell Me Who - Boxer
The Angelic Gospel Singers - Jesus Never Fails Me /I'll Be Alright - Nashboro Records
Junior Parker - I'm In Love / Jivin' Woman - Duke 384

I'll send you a better list with everything on it... I just gotta sit down and go thru my collection
HAPPY TRAILS

Hi Joe, a formidable playlist indeed! Several of the artists (principally the gospel groups) are unfamiliar to me, but are, I'm sure, well worth checking out. So many, of course, are familiar to me thanks to Ace/Kent records (Al Simmons' "Old Folks Boogie" is one of the truly great feel-good blues records). Very best to you & see you soon, B.
