Current mood: angry
Nottingham shows...Maze - 28th May and Running Horse - 13th June 2009
Hello all, sorry for the delay with this blog... we've been really busy in the studio and promoting shows - where does all the time go?! How are you anyway?
I was going to write a blog regarding a 'front' I'm planning on setting up. A 'front' that involves bands and money... but due to my current mood I don't want to rant on at you and your delicate ears so I'll leave that one for a bit... but may just hint at it in a bit.
The Maze, Nottingham - 28th May 2009 We were asked to support a Nottingham band who go by the name The Kull. The other band supporting was the Dirty Herberts. I liked them - they had the energy of a lot of bands that Luxury Stranger is influenced by... keep an eye out for them - I hope to get them playing with us some time.
Anyway, after sitting around waiting for soundcheck and then finding we were to have no soundcheck, LS hit the stage shortly after the 'erberts. We gave a performance that would leave people with mouths open... apparently there were a few 'important' and 'influencial' people there on the night... LS was full of energy as per usual but this time with an added sense of fury/anger... maybe we should go on without soundcheck more often.
The set for the evening was: Precious for evermore Elements Making Becci laugh Dirt Where you've gone On+On&OnandOn
A great show and a great audience... some great pics/film from that one too - check out the pics and vids sections here on Myspace and/or the Luxury Stranger Youtube site.
The Running Horse, Nottingham - 13th June 2009 Two Nottingham shows quite close to eachother but seemed like an eternity to us... so we did a spot more recording and more writing inbetween...
For this RH show we were blessed with support from the lovely Beck Stacey and dark electro-pop group One Moment.
Beck Stacey opened the evening with an acoustic number - her vocals dancing over the chords... chatting inbetween tunes - you can't quite catch what she says... cute. For some of the later songs, Beck plays piano - fingers dancing across the keys and her vocal skipping in that Kate Bush/Tori Amos style that seems to be 'in' at the moment. I've been a fan of Kate Bush since I was a small child - this was a close runner-up. Looking forward to having Beck in the Running Horse again on 18th September!
One Moment eventually got on stage due to some delays with the sound guy... oh Tom, where for art thou Tom? 'Bang' into the first electro-drenched song... 'click' - something's wrong... oh no - technical problems. After this was out of the way, lead vocalist and One Moment mainman/founder member announced that they were moving on to the next song... this little hiccup seemed to fuel One Moment and made the darkness more apparent... I liked this performance, as did many others. Imagine the sleeze of early Soft Cell with a touch of Dave Gahn's nasel tones... Dik gives a cracking performance, Rice reflects this with his cool Kraftwerk-esque playing - looking the part in his military style jacket... great band!
Luxury Stranger crawled on to the stage at about 11pm - a late one but fans stuck around... New songs had been promised and new songs were played in the hour-long set.
'Punishment' - a 'Grounded' for the new album? The power behind this song is immence and there's hardly a distortion pedal in sight... only used to give more sustain in the solo. 'If you love me...' a very dark almost death march of a song - a ballad? a song of regret or a tale warning? Not too sure yet... both new songs fell into the set with ease and went down really well with the audience made up of familiar faces and newbies... that's what we like!
The set for the evening was: Precious for evermore Making Becci laugh Elements Punishment (live debut) Inner eye Where you've gone Dreaming our lives away Dirt Item (this was dropped from the set during performance due to time) Grounded If you love me (live debut - see vid in the Myspace vids section) On+On&OneandOn
I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended - without you we wouldn't be able to do this... I'd like to thank Fiona, Steve and all at the Running Horse - without you we wouldn't be able to do this... I'd like to thank all the people who help with promotion, doing the door, helping with gear, photos and film - without you we wouldn't be able to do this... I'd personally like to thank Chris and Owen - without you I wouldn't be able to do this...
What's next? Before I go into the 'what's next?' bit of things I'd like to announce something - Luxury Stranger's deepest appologies. We're very sorry that we won't/didn't play at the Primrose in Leeds today (21st June). We were really looking forward to playing but circumstances arose which made it so that we couldn't get to Leeds to play.
Many apologies to the people from Leeds who had told me they were coming to see us for the first time (hope you can make our next Leeds show on 3rd July)... Many apologies to Keys to Machinery for messing you about and for the last minute letting you know of the situation. I know a lot of hard work and money has gone into promoting/booking this show and I personally know how un-professional it is to drop from a show...if we decided to not turn up for work at the last minute I'm sure we'd get a ticking-off/letter of notice or worse.
So... what's next? Well we're playing at the Revolution! night in Ilkeston on Friday 26th June and then at the Vic Inn on Saturday 27th June supporting Gundogs... I'm back in the studio on 28th June adding a few more guitar parts to 'Elements' and looking at the extra bits of guitar... As mentioned ealier, we're in Leeds on Friday 3rd July at Subculture supporting The Screaming Banshee Aircrew at their album launch show.
On Thursday 18th July, we're back at the Running Horse with support from Goodbye Smile (who has now changed his/their name to Twikki) and Keys to Mahcinery... on the 17th July, we're at the Rockhouse in Derby supporting Sketches.
On the 24th July we're in Darlington for the Grounded night... should be good! And then on Friday 31st July we play at the Y Not Festival - really looking forward to this.
In between all that, no doubt we'll be in the studio and also hard at work promoting up-and-coming shows - we never stop cos it's what we want...
I'll leave it there for now but soon I will be telling you about my plans for a 'front' of bands who believe musicians should be paid to play - "in it for the money or just trying to make a living"... at the end of the day, how are musicians expected to pay for strings etc, instrument up-keep and insurance and still afford to have the time to write/record new material? Some people say "that's what the day job is for..." in the next breath they ask how it is that LS has managed to achieve so much in so little time... I tell them "Oh we only have three hours sleep a day..."
Speak soon, Si X
