'The Moon'
The moon is an interesting object.
'When Alan Shepard was on the moon
he hit a golf ball nearly a half mile.'
'The moon contains 9.4
billion acres.'
'On the moon there is no wind or water'.
(These moon facts come from the online source
moonconnection.com)
We are told the moon controls the
ocean tides and is blamed for all sorts of odd human behavior. I have
friends in the mental health care profession who swear that some
people tend to veer off the deep end or at least into uncharted
waters during the full moon phase. It always brings a heightened
awareness among those folks.
My wife and I noticed it when we
were in the antique business.
We attended auctions on a regular
basis and as luck would have it we began to notice purchases we made
during a full moon were very often purchases we couldn't explain. 'We
bought what??', we would say to each other afterward.
'We paid how much for that?' Followed by this: 'How are we
ever gonna get our money back?'
Soon we realized that for
our own benefit we would only attend auctions during a full moon as
sellers, not buyers. That worked very well because we sat back
and let others be the victims of this weird phenomonon. They bought
our sometimes useless treasures and paid too much......which helped
us recover at least partially from our moon struck purchases. I
imagine there's a Wall Street corollary there somewhere but I
wouldn't bet serious money on any of it.
The moon. 'When a
month has two full moons the second one is known as a 'Blue Moon'.
I
told my daughter several years ago on her first tour of duty in Iraq
that though we were thousands of miles apart, it was a comfort to me
to look up at the night sky and know that she and I were looking at
the same big moon. I could throw a kiss at the moon and he could
throw it on to her. Silly juvenile stuff but a comfort
nonetheless.
The moon has been the subject of countless love
songs and horror stories. And love song/horror stories, of unrequited
love and murder by moonlight.
And one soul who never made it
back from the moon.
A certain Dr. Shoemaker whose ashes
were sent there in 1999 and is the only person who is 'buried' there.
The moon could easily be known as Shoemaker's Moon or Shoemakers
Graveyard but it's not likely to happen anytime soon.
Lots of
literature, fantasy, day dreams, nightmares and history have been
centered on the moon.
I'd bet a blue moon against a big, ole,
sloppy, barbecue sandwich it'll be that way forever.
