... If you come to think of it, TYRANT and the band up next, ABATTOIR, have quite a few things in common : they both hail from the same neighbourhood in the state of California, they both started out by releasing one of their tunes on a Metal Massacre compilation, they both released two albums in the mid 1980’s, this was the first trip to Europe for both bands, … And of course both bands were innovators when it comes to the metal genre in general, with ABATTOIR being one of the earliest speed metal bands ever. The band was plagued with line-up changes from day one, yet they managed to release a milestone speed metal debut : Vicious Attack in 1985. With yet another band constellation, The Only Safe Place followed in 1986 already, but it also marked the beginning of the end : the style had changed a bit to a less speed influenced variation and after some more line-up hassles the band was over and done with by 1988. Earlier this decade there was a reunion, and that’s how I got to see ABATTOIR live at the first Classic Metal Festival in Kalamazoo, back in 2001. Some more demo stuff followed, before the band slipped into obscurity once again. Only to be resurrected in late 2008, after being asked to co-headline this festival. Some more gigs throughout Europe were added, just to make the band’s first ever time in Europe even more enjoyable. Apart from guitarist Tim Thomas (who replaced Marc Caro, who couldn’t make the trip due to illness) the nowadays ABATTOIR line-up consists of familiar ABATTOIR faces Steve Gaines (vocals), guitarist Juan Garcia, bassist Mel Sanchez,
plus drummer Rob Alaniz (ex EVIL DEAD). As far as the setlist goes there were no complaints either : how could you possibly go wrong by incorporating the entire Vicious Attack release? Add three songs off The Only Safe Place (opener Bring On The Damned, Hammer Of The Gods & Under My Skin) and one later-period song (Everybody Dies) and what you get is a setlist that could hardly have been any better! And, since the initially scheduled EVIL DEAD show had to be cancelled, the band decided to include Annihilation Of Civilization as well. Together with the inevitable crowdpleaser Screams From The Grave and their version of MOTÖRHEAD’s Ace Of Spades, that song definitely caused a helluva lot of crowd activity in front of the stage. In short : ABATTOIR managed to convince all the way. All we can wait for now is a full-fledged EVIL DEAD reunion!...
