Category: Writing and Poetry
When I was 9 years old my mother bought me 'The Chronicles of Narnia' as a birthday present. It was the first time (with the exception of the Bible of course:) I can recall actually enjoying a book. Soon after that I immersed myself in the complete works of Issac Asimov and Aesops fables. Imagination is an essential tool for writers of fiction. This obviously includes song-writers as well as the authors of books, theatrical plays and film. Unlike the latter though, a book doesn't try to HELP you paint pictures. A well written book encourages you to dig deep into your own experiences and paint your own. We're talking two people, same book, different take. And that my friend, is why you can't beat a good read.

So true! And it was once said of books that "[they] are the quietest and most constant of friends; the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers". To me there's nothing as strong and powerful as being so engrossed in a book that you just can't stop reading it and wish at the same time you never finished it to keep this feeling going! I can't wait to find the next book that is going to transport me so completely.
Have you read anything particularly inspiring lately?

I competely recommend the book I'm currently reading. It's called " A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson. It's basically science made readable by those of us who wouldn't know the difference between a proton and a crouton. Particularly embarrasing if you have an annoyingly intelligent family member who happens to be 15-20 years younger! Awesome!

Ha ha Sounds like a book for me :-) And Bill Bryson's a lot of fun to read (I only know him through his travel books)!
I'm just starting Just Above My Head by James Baldwin, which is my first attempt at his novels after it was recommended to me by an enthusiastic shop assistant at Waterstone’s, while I was trying to find a birthday present for a friend (I ended up getting her Another Country by Baldwin, and the appropriately titled Birthday Stories by Murakami). It feels like I’m embarking on a new adventure, and that’s VERY exciting!
Enjoy your readings xx

I whole heartedly agree! I'm a book addict - and am working on a site for Audio Books - I'm looking forward to posting a link when it's all up and running. In the meantime - if you like Issac Asminov - you'll love Philip K. Dick - try Minority Report - a collection of short stories as a taster. Happy 2007!

Hey there - hope you're well.. the first book that I really enjoyed was "the lion, the witch and the wardrobe" given to me by my fourth grade teacher... after I read that I was hooked on books and loved the Narnia series!! I still love to read and do so almost everyday. Being a reader has definetely helped me to be a better songwriter... it's also helped to expand my imagination and given me knowledge and tolerance for ideas that are different from my own... what are you reading now?

All the best,
Di
btw - cool music! Hope you like mine also...
