BUDDHISM & MEDICINE CONFERENCE CALL SEMINAR
(January 30, 2010 from 2pm to 6pm)
This webinar is designed to introduce participants to Pierce Salguero’s PhD research in Buddhist medicine. The session will begin with an overview of Buddhist medicine in the earliest Indian tradition, and then proceed to discuss the spread of Buddhist medicine throughout Asia and eventually to the West. The chief focus of the class will be on the medical texts present in the Chinese Tripitaka, which are a treasure trove of medical knowledge preserved from throughout ancient and medieval Asia. Pierce will walk participants through this material, discussing individual texts and their contents. We will discuss:
the role of Buddhism in crosscultural exchange of medicine
basic Buddhist medical theories
the relationship between Buddhist medicine, Ayurveda, and Chinese medicine
Buddhist medical practices relevant to contemporary practitioners
