I've set up this MySpace page for Isaiah Owens because I think he's someone who really deserves a wider audience. Bringing Isaiah to NYC (a collaborative effort by Kevin Nutt, Steven Joerg, Adam Lore and myself) was a revelation for everyone involved. It was the first time in the City and the first plane trip for Isaiah. I'm not absolutely sure, but the WFMU Record Fair was probably the first time he'd seen a kid with a candy-colored mohawk as well. Isaiah gave two great performances for enthusiastic audiences at Barbes in Brooklyn, heaping a big portion of tent revival into a Park Slope night spot. After one of the shows, a young guy excitedly explained to Isaiah that he'd listened to tons of blues records and that Isaiah was "the real shit", to which Isaiah smiled and thanked him in gentlemanly fashion. Isaiah told us he'd learned a lot from playing in New York and indeed, I think his performances have become more cohesive and even more powerful. Besides that, Isaiah is a truly great guy who's a pleasure to spend time with for anyone fortunate enough to to have the opportunity.
Now that I'm living back in Alabama, I'm hoping to set up some live appearances for him in the Southeast. Stay tuned for updates.
Thanks - Sylvia Parker
