By Todd Beemis

On The Carport Sessions -- one of the most pleasantly creative album titles I've come across in years -- The Brooks Sisters have delivered one of the strongest arguments since the Wilson brothers that the best harmonies are rooted in blood relationships as much as 24-track recording equipment.

Folks, there's simply not a musical or vocal misstep on this record. In a less positive aspect, this means the music is safe and soothing -- I'd like to get even a hint that the ladies might toilet paper a house or steal a car. You won't find a parental notification sticker on this jewel case.

But for lovers of pure and soulful pop/folk, this is something akin to finding a giant keg of chilled Molson. You like your Joni? Your Rikki Lee? Your Indigo Girls? Step on up and meet the Brooks Sisters, because you're gonna get along fine.

Aside from the platinum vocals, one of the most satisfying aspects of The Carport Sessions is the tale they tell of its birth. Apparently, they invited numerous friends and family members to play and sing on it -- a truly indie approach. But far from turning this into some kitchen porch free-for-all, the end result of all that inclusiveness is polished and pleasing. I suppose it helps that in the case of these ladies, their friends and family are mostly all musicians too.

You can blame Canada all you like for such things as Anne Murray and Glass Tiger, but our maple leaf lovin' neighbors to the north deserve a pat on the back of their hockey jerseys for bringing us the sweet and accessible harmonies of The Brooks Sisters.
