Group Shoot Frequently Asked Questions for Models. © Lesley Arak
This FAQ is a work in progress - If you have questions that aren't in this list, feel free to leave them in the comments and we'll do our best to answer them!
Models! - Do you want to be considered as a model for the monthly FNS Studios Group Shoot? Leave a comment on this blog and tell me so, or send a message directly. (No tags, please)
Q. Where are you located?
A. FNS Studios is located in Springfield, MA. Approximately: 1/2 (one half) hour from Hartford CT 1 1/2 (one and a half) hours from Boston MA, Albany NY and Providence RI 3 (three) hours from NYC
Q. How long are the Group Shoots?
A. We shoot all day - Call time is 10am, and we wrap up at 5pm(ish) with a break for lunch. (Lunch is pizza, and it's on us.)
Q. How much does this event cost?
A. For invited/booked models? Nothing.
Q. What is expected of me as a Group Shoot model?
A. -That you will be on time. -That you will be friendly and polite to everyone else who is there. -That you will read the FAQ & listen in the morning when Lesley tells you the rules, and that you will follow them. -That you will come to the shoot with appropriate wardrobe and a good attitude. -That you will come with shooting ideas, even general ones, or that you will be open to shooting the photographers' ideas. (Or both) -That if you need to cancel for any reason, you will get in touch with Lesley and tell her with enough notice to that she has time to book another model to replace you. Q. I’m under 18 – Can I model at a Group Shoot? A. Unfortunately, we cannot allow underage models to come to Group Shoots. All models must be able to sign their own paperwork (model release), and you can’t do that until you’re 18. But if you’re *almost* 18, feel free to write to us and let us know you’d like to be considered as soon as you have your next birthday!
Q. What should I bring/wear?
A. The models generally bring large suitcases full of a variety of clothing and shoes. It differs from model to model, depending on their taste and wardrobe, and can really be all over the map. Prepy, gothic, girl-next-door, classy, dressy, skimpy, sexy, punk, alternative, vintage, steampunk, etc. The clothing varies as much as our models do! We also have a large collection of clothing, costumes and shoots at the studio to supplement your wardrobe - and at Group Shoots the models tend to share clothing with each other, too.
Q. Is hair or makeup provided? A. For the most part, we will always have either a professional hairstylist or makeup artist there at the Group Shoots. Sometimes both. Once in a blue moon, none of our regular stylists are available, but there are always models who are good at hair&makeup and are willing to help the other models out. Being able to do your own hair and/or makeup is a big plus.
Q. Do you expect me to get naked?
A. Nope! Nude/topless photos are always on a case-by-case basis. Some models do them, some don't. Some of the Group Shoot models never do nudes, some will occasionally do them, and some like to run around naked all day. You are never expected to model in any way that you're not comfortable with, and nudes are not the focus of the Group Shoots.
Q. Can I bring my escort/chapperone/MUA/assistant/lifepartner/child/boyfriend/girlfriend/etc?
A. Generally not, as there is not really a need for you to do this. This is not a one-on-one shoot where it’s just you and the photographer. There are plenty of other people around – All the other models, photographers, mua, hairstylist, etc., plus Lesley. The Group Shoots make the studio space *very full* and besides being distracting, extra people will physically be in the way. In short, there will be chaperones a-plenty there, and I have nowhere to put your friend. Please do not bring an unexpected child, pet or friend along with you. Don't worry, we're friendly and non-threatening! If you want to bring someone who comes up with you in the morning, comes in for 10 minutes to make sure it's cool, and then leaves, that is fine, they're welcome to do that. NOTE: If we invite you to come, and you want to, but you absolutely *have* to have someone come with you because your car's in the shop or something and they're your only ride, please tell Lesley, she'll figure it out with you.
Q. But photographers who say they don't allow escorts are sketchy creeps.
A. Probably some are. But not all of them, and not us. We're fun and nice! Plus, we're happy to provide you with *dozens* of references from models who come and shoot with us at the Group Shoots.
Q. Can I bring my Mom and/or Dad?
A. Nope. All Group Shoot models are at least 18, so there's no need for a parental chapperone. We're sure your parent is very nice and you think they won't be a distraction, etc, etc, but we've made exceptions to this rule in the past, and it's always a distraction. Sorry.
Q. Do you have pre-made "Stations" or Sets that I will shoot on?
A. No, we do not have permanent "stations" for shooting. Ours is a working studio, so everything is kept mobile. We have furniture (Various chairs, three couches, a bed with bedding provided, etc), seamless in many various colors, and a very large clothing, costume and prop collection. We will also occasionally paint parts of the wall different colors. We think that, among other things, it helps keep the images shot at the Group Shoots from all starting to look the same. Also, the studio is in an old Mill building, so there are all sorts of cool industrial settings as well.
Q. Can I see pictures that have been taken at Group Shoots?
A. Yes! In our MySpace Albums is an album called: "FNS Group Shoot photos! (by various photogs)" . www.MySpace.com/FNSStudios In this album are photos from many of our past Group Shoots taken both in-studio and all over the complex, so you can get a better idea of locations that will be available to you. There are also separate albums with a few pics from the more recent Group Shoots separated by month, as well as the candids album. We have a lot of fun and silliness at the Group Shoots.
Q. I've modeled at a FNS Group Shoot before - does this mean I'm automatically invited to every one?
A. No. While we often invite models back fairly often, we also need to add new faces to the Group Shoots, which means that the invites tend to rotate a little bit to insure a good mix of models. Q. I’ve modeled at FNS Group Shoots in the past, but it’s been a while, and I’d like to come again. What should I do? A. Send Lesley a message (myspace, facebook, modelmayhem or email) telling her that you’d like her to keep you in mind when she starts the next round of booking. We’re always happy to hear from old friends.
Q. How can I be sure that I'm booked for a Group Shoot?
A. You're booked if Lesley has told you she's put you "on the list". Every Group Shoot has a master list of all booked models and photographers. This is how Lesley keeps track of everyone. If you're "on the list" you're booked. This means she's expecting you, so if something should come up and you can't make it after all, you need to contact her and let her know within a reasonable amount of time so she can find a replacement for you. The week of the Group Shoot, all of the models get a confirmation email with directions, wardrobe requests and other info.
Q. Can I come to the Group Shoot and act like an ass?
A. No, no you can't. In fact, rudeness or inappropriate behavior towards the other models, the photographers, or our stylist/MUA (not to mention us!) will result in you being asked to leave, and you will likely not be invited back. A safe, fun, non-threatening environment is very, very important to us. A general rule of thumb: No flakes, no divas, no drama queens, no sulking, no whining, no pouting. :D
Q. I think I'd like to come, but I'm not sure. Can I just drop by the studio during a Group Shoot and check it out?
A. No. Please, no. The Group Shoots are not "open studio days" or anything of the sort. They are not the time to come "check it out" or meet us, or hang out with the models. Everyone attending - photographers, models, makeup artists, etc - has been booked in advance of the day. Yes, the Group Shoots are fun and relaxed and a little chaotic, but if random people started just "stopping by" in the middle, Lesley would be very upset. Prior arrangements must be made to see the space. Thanks for understanding.
Q. How many models/photographers will there be?
A. The number of models changes with the number of photographers booked. We always book at least two more models that photographers. This allows for hair/makeup&wardrobe changes to happen without having photographers sitting around waiting and without models feeling rushed. Number of photographers usually falls between 6 and 10. The shoots are all one-on-one.
Q. Does each model have one photographer throughout the day or do they switch as the day goes on?
A. Basically, a model and photographer will pair up, pick out wardrobe, shoot, and then each will find another person to work with and begin again. Shooting sessions last roughly 45 min to an hour. Please keep this in mind and limit your shooting time! This is the format that we have found works best and keep the flow of the day going smoothly.
Q. Does that mean that I can shoot with a photographer for 45 minutes, then go put on a different outfit and shoot with them again?
A. No, it does not. We want everyone to have a chance to work with as many people as they can/want to in the day. Once you have worked with a photographer, you must release them back into the general population to at least *see* if there are any other models free who would like to shoot with them. IF, and only if, everyone else is occupied at that time, you may shoot again. You are totally free to work with the same photographer more than once during the day, just not in back-to-back sessions. Q. How will I get my pictures after the shoot? A. After the Group Shoots, an email is sent out to all of the participants (models and photographers) with names and contact info (email address, ModelMayhem#, etc). This way, models and photographers can connect with the people that they shot with. Generally photographers deliver the images to the models through email, although some will mail a disk. Some photographers will also provide you with select prints of their favorite images, but not everyone does this and it is not required. Q. When will I get my pictures after the shoot? A. That will vary from photographer to photographer. Some of them will go home and start editing pictures that same evening. Some will take a week or two to find the time in their schedules. All photographers sign a release at the Group Shoot agreeing to deliver images to each model that they shoot with within 30 days of the Group Shoot.
Q. I have a model/friend that I think would be great for the Group Shoots. Can I invite her/bring her with me/tell her to call you?
A. Short answer – no. Longer answer – We have a large group of models from all over New England that come to the Group Shoots. Some come all the time, some come only once in a while. Generally we are fine for models. However, we are always open to meeting new awesome models, and sometimes we do have last-minute cancellations and need replacement models. If you know of a model who you think would be good at a Group Shoot, please email Lesley with a brief note and a link to a website where she can see pictures of this model. (ModelMayhem, non-private Myspace page, OMP, etc.) She must be able to see pictures of the person you want to bring before she can decide – after all, this is modeling! If Lesley thinks this person would be a good fit and do well, she will let you know. Do not be hurt if she says no. Lesley is very picky, and a lot goes into selecting Group Shoot models.
Q. What about Model Releases?
A. All of the models and photographers attending the Group Shoots sign a Group Shoot Model Release. It is a standard, non-commercial model release. The photographers retain copyrights to the images, while agreeing in writing to deliver images (in digital and/or print form) to all of the models that they work with within 30 days of the shoot. (Images from the Group Shoots may not be sold as stock images or used on pay sites without separate prior written consent from the models.)
Q. I left you a tag on your MySpace or ModelMayhem profile saying I wanted to be a Group Shoot model, and you didn't answer me! Why?
A. For the sake of organization, we do not respond to Tags, on any profile. Please consider sending a message directly.
Q. I wrote you a private message or commented on this journal asking to be considered as a Group Shoot model, and I never heard back/you wrote back and said no. What gives? A. Well, there’s no “nice” way to say No to someone. (We whish there was!) Not everyone who wants to model at a Group Shoot is what we’re looking for, unfortunately. A lot of different factors go into selecting the models. Height, body type, hair type/length/color, if you look like you photograph well, attitude, style, location, etc, etc. We try every month to put together a good mix of models to give the photographers a variety of looks and styles. (For example, if we already have 4 blond models booked one month, we probably would give priority to brunettes and redheads to round out the group. Things like that.) We will not even consider anyone who does not have at least one straight-on face shot and one straight on, full length shot in their photos. We need to be able to see what you really look like. Q. But I still want cool photos of me! How can I get some? A. Both Lesley and Matthew are available to hire for model portfolio and portrait sessions at reasonable rates. Lesley is based in Western Mass, and Matthew is based in NYC, although he travels back to MA once or twice a month. If you’d like to book a session with Lesley or Matthew, please send a message telling us who you’d like to work with and what you’re looking for.
