when i first put together a myspace page and i had to say what genre of music i make, i just chose rock, rockabilly, and death metal. i couldn't say pop, even though my music is pretty pop, because it made me feel too "american idol." i couldn't simply say rock, because although i like to think that i do still RAWK in my own subtle, gentle way, it seemed misrepresentative. i couldn't say alternative, because what the hell does that even MEAN anymore (and what did it ever mean?), and besides, i say the word "baby" way too many times to qualify for that one. i just saw death metal and rockabilly on there, and i jumped at the chance to finesse the whole annoying request to label the type of music i make. i thought it was a harmless thing to do, but it appears i have made some people on myspace very angry at me. here are few of my favorite messages:

subject: why are you under death metal?

body: because you SUCK ASS!!

or this one...

subject: WTF

body: where do you get off saying your death metal? cannibal corpse are death metal. napalm death are death metal. your piece of shit pop crap isn't death metal so get the fuck out of here...

and the most recent one:

subject: you pop culture whore

body: quit plaguing the top 100 death metal board with your worthless shit you call music!!

okay, so i didn't realize there was a top 100 death metal board but apparently, i am NUMBER 25!! i have never laughed so hard. anyway, not all the death metal heads are this angry with me-- here was one i got the other day:

subject: a new fan

body: Your music is amazing. Funny thing though, your labeled under Death metal and I didn't hear any death metal songs. I was looking for Slipknot and I saw you, a cute hottie and was curious. Well, I'm happy I came across your profile. So, you single?

awww, sweet...

the rockbilly folks have been less vocal. here's the only one from their camp:

subject: not rockabilly!!!

body: sorry your not a rockabilly!! sorry miss, you sound like the i miss you chick........ lisa loeb! later shaun

and i am NUMBER 3 on the rockabilly top 100!! genius. looks like the rockabilly dudes and the death metal dudes have 2 things in common-- their disdain for my music, and their inability to distiguish between "your" and "you're."

hours of amusement, offers of dates from sensitive slipknot fans-- this whole thing has made me reconsider the music i DO make. it may be time for a crossover.

dark regards,

nina

How about "Death Rockabilly Pop?" You'd fit well there. Oh well. Sounds like you made a few new fans.

And you're WAY more talented than Lisa Loeb. Sorry Lisa.

Hey Nina, I really don't care what category you are forced to be placed under.  I am a true fan of "yours" lol, and I will continue to listen to your music no matter what.  You are an awesome chic and I wish you much success and many blessings on the road ahead of you!  <3 Christian :)

Oh dear, Nina. These people obviously don't understand the music category system, and they do not realize that artists have the right to determine what category(ies) they feel represents their music. You could put your music under 'gothic rock metal hardcore blah blah blah,' and I wouldn't be offended. I love your music, and you're very sweet and honest, that's what's important to me. I agree, what exactly is 'alternative' music? Is it a combination of something? or perhaps, an unfair label for an artist? Is it the alternate choice of...? Your music is beautiful, and yes, you can rock 'RAWK.' Those who take offense to artist's category choices, let it go. Listen to the music, determine your own choice of category or make one up. Sending artists these messages listed from Nina is rude and unnecessary. I'm not instructing others what to do, just trying to be reasonable. Nina is an artist, and a damn great one, and I think that MYSPACE staff/whomever should allow every artist to ENTER their category for music, rather than having multiple choice/such. Nina, thank you for your work, you rock! Ronald Lutz

Yes, who would have guessed that fans of the "death metal" genre could be so cruel?  Anyhow, no matter what you choose to label yourself, we all still adore you.

Hi Nina,

That is hilarious. I hate categorizing music, it's almost impossible at times. As far as I'm concerned there are only two types of music. Good music and Fantastic music. All music is good to begin with, if you have taken the time to create something, it's good. Fantastic music is music that I actually love and go out and buy. Your music is fantastic to me. Thanks again for the laugh,

your friend,
Alan

Nina,

Death metal and rockabilly never sounded and looked so good. The new album is great. My neck still hurts from listening to it.

Cheers...

Can you start a genre of music for "hollaback girls"? We need to get you on the top of more lists.

wow, those people take it WAY too seriously. i mean, it's just myspace for god's sake. according to mine, i'm a 6'1" black Wiccan divorce', b/c who really gives a fuck? plus, is looking at your page for 2 seconds before they realize the mistake REALLY that big of an inconvenience? ooh, wait, they might actually be forced to listen to something outside of their narrow musical spectrum. can't have that happening, can we?

I must admit I was curious about that the first time I saw "you're" profile, but didn't see it being worth the time to ask.  I think you seem to get less and less "heavy" since Eight Arms to Hold You.  But, that's "you're" business.  As long as "you're" voice is on the CD, I'll check it out, because you haven't let me down yet.  And this is from a fan of Slipknot and Slayer.

Fight the power!! You bring "life" to Death Metal, Nina. Those people need more sunny Nina Gordon songs in their dark, rockabilly-deprived lives.

Your cool...stay that way.

Also, please come to Seattle soon. What's up with the tour?

That's ok... at least it's just random folks you've never met! If it makes you feel any better, my last project was much "darker and heavier" than what I'm doing these days, and my wife delighted in telling me how it wasn't that heavy or anything compared to her musical heroes... these days, she actually likes the more blatantly "pop" stuff I'm doing more than anything "heavier" from the old band, which is slightly ironic... though she does still take pains to remind me that I'm not at all hardcore, should delusions of death metal creep into my playing when I accidentally have the gain up on the amp or something...

I think it's great you've managed to cross all these borders and make new friends without even trying, though. Maybe you should pick a Morbid Angel song to cover sweetly and acoustically a la "Straight Outta Compton" and release as a single in time for the holidays?

Nina, I wrote a whole blog about you and your new album awhile back.  I've single-handedly converted 12 people to your cause (yes, Nina, you have a dozen more Ninions <---a play on "minions" (<-- the explanation is for the death metal crowd) this space is to seperate those curvy lines between them so I didn't have two curvy lines next to each other. (Also called "parentheses")) <---DAMMIT! , anyhoo, I did that for you as well as defeated the Olympians from their thrones on Mount Olympus restoring the Titans once again to their rightful reign as the old gods on Mount Othrys.  Or maybe that last part was a dream.  Anyway...  I'm rooting for you!  You're the only death metal I'd listen to. If it wasn't for Johnny Cash you'd be the only rockabilly I'd listen to, as well.

As a death metal fan/musician, I can say with no qualms that anyone that would have an issue with you being on a "top list" on Myspace...is quite simply a tool. Plain and simple. Should Metal Hammer or Rue Morgue magazine say you were on a elite list of death metal, I'd also not attack you, but probably laugh at the credability of said magazines.

Most listeners of death metal have a sense of humor that I have met. I apologize for anyone lacking etiquette that's messaged you. Good luck with you're career. (Or is it your...oh well...)

Oh dear... people just do not have a radar for humour and/or irony anymore, huh!?  Funny about being in their top 25.  It's all ok though, and here's why:  you wrote, played, sang, etc. on 'Earthcrosser'... [that whole record really, but that's another post]  The  kick in after "Where's my lip GLOSS..." is WAY heavier than most death metal wishes it could be.

Love the new record too though- just discovering your solo stuff.  Cheers, -A
