The Durango Fury travelled to Colorado Springs this past weekend to participate in the 8th Annual Pucktoberfest Women's hockey tournament. With ice only seasonally in Durango and only 3 practices under their belts, the Fury went with high hopes though unsure of how they would compare with teams with year round ice. The results of early season hard work paid off as the Fury drove away from Colorado Springs with the Championship in hand.
The first game was a show down with the Angry Dolphins, a team from San Francisco who flew in specifically for this tournament. The Fury jumped out to an early 5-1 lead though made the game a little more exciting as the Dolphins battled back towards the end resulting in a Fury win with a score of 5-3.
The second game was a tough battle against the Pucking Witches. After falling behind early 1-0 the Fury made a come back of their own, winning 2-1.
The final game of pool play brought on the host team, the Timberwolves. The Fury came out fast and strong and when the final buzzer sounded the final score showed the gals from Durango dominating 7-0.
Sunday morning brought the Championship game and a rematch with the Angry Dolphins. The score held at 0-0 until Kendra Johnson scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and Stacy Falk cemented the victory late in the third with an empty net goal as the Dolphins had pulled their goalie in a last ditch effort to tie the game up.
All in all a great weekend for the Fury as they start the season undefeated, 4-0. The roster for the weekend included: Jenny Aponowicz, Megan McCulloch, Rick Evers, Michelle Campbell, Kaitlynn Mraz, Sally West, Kendra Johnson, Missy Votel, Stacy Falk, Michelle Brown, Gillain Arnwine, Corey Rosen and Goalie Shannon Stassin.
Kendra was named to the All-Tournament Team and Shannon enjoyed the honor of Tournament MVP.
