Tuning & Timing: Natural Resonance
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge (Galloping Gertie) that waved around in the wind, until it collapsed in 1940 is an example for the physical power of resonance. Industrial music shows what effects vibrating, hammering machines & electronics can have on the human body & mind. In the course of evolution our bodies became aquainted to obvious rhythms like day & night, summer & winter, no food & plenty food and also all those subtle rhythms of other planets (many-body-chaotic movement), and the millions of molecules that we consist of & bath in. So with that in mind it is exciting to carry these experiments further into unknown i.e. nearly forgotten territory.
In 1939 Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels dictated 440Hz as the standard tuning pitch. This to let people think and feel in a certain manner, and to keep them a prisoner of a certain consciousness. This in spite of that Professor Dussaut from the Paris Conservatory wrote a referendum that was signed by 23,000 French musicians who all were for the preservation of the A= 432Hz. Freedom of choice in bringing back the frequency of the earth is what it's all about today. Hans Cousto ("The Cosmic Octave") rediscovered, studied and made popular the idea that any frequency in nature can be made audible or visible vea sctaving it up or down:
"Through the use of the octave principle as the universal code, it is possible to make harmonies of the spheres, as well as those of molecules and atoms, audible. This is realized by octave transposition, i.e. the halving or doubling of frequencies. The octave is the interval with the least energetic resistance (besides unision) and of all the int- ervalls is most prominent in the tonic keynote itself. Thus the octave holds a unique position in the realms of intervals. this is relavant not only to music but in a general way, because the prin- ciples of music can be applied to other areas of nature as well. (light, heartbeat, beat of wings etc.)
The planet tones on this CD are acoustical exponents from our natural cosmic surroundings and our focus on them brings us into harmony with the way of things. Music tuned to molecules, like planetary music, is composed in accordance with strict harmonic- al rules and is based on existing harmonic structures and the natural laws which govern the "cosmic octave". The compositional elements of music tuned to molecules (tempo, rhythm, pitch, intervals, LFO's) derived from the physically measurable resonance of molecules in both the ultraviolet and infra- red range. THe resulting measurements are then transposed into rhythms and frequencies in the audible range and these form the basis of the entire musical composition.
The sound of the psychotropic molecule (psychoactive substance) is particulary significant, be- cause the vibrational structure of the molecule can be experienced by way of music without having to obtain, possess, or consume the substance."
