"Et tu, Brute?"-Caesar

Of all the songs on 'Getback' this one probably needs the least explanation, so I'mma be real brief with all you motherfuckers (c)Snoop.

The ones you love are the ones who hurt you the most, so goes the cliche.  In writing my verse for this song, I did my best to express my feelings of pain and disappointment about *that* situation rather than be all "FIRST OFF FUCK YA BITCH AND THE CLICK YOU CLAIM!" like I was Taypac or some shit.  The interlude that comes before this song is the original version of 'The Way You Do It' that me and my man Eccentric recorded back in 2000 for my solo project.....(it was re-worked two years later into the version you hear on "The Listening").  I figured it was the best way I could represent the ending of an era.

I will say though, that this was the only song I initially had doubts about.  Part of me was like, "Dude, why waste time talkin about this?  If Atlantic gets behind this record the right way, your new fans ain't even gonna know that y'all usta have a 3rd member...nor will they care.."  But then another part of me felt like I owed something to the people who stuck by us through all the drama...and not saying anything about it on my part woulda been a copout of sorts ("WHAT pink elephant in the room? *looks around*  I surely don't see a pink elephant in the room...")  For the record, me, Pooh, and Jozee all wrote our verses about different people.  Once we got dropped from Atlantic and saw that we'd be pretty much workin the record on our own, I knew I'd made the right decision to leave my verse as is and that our fans would appreciate something so personal.

As for the aftermath?

To this day, I have no idea how 9th feels about this song.  Up until a few weeks ago, we hadn't said more than five words to each other in over a year.  I reached out to him about my 12 Days of Getback concept, and he was gracious enough to do a video for 'Breakin My Heart.'  Don't expect a reunion, but my guess is that he, like me, is just making music and moving on with life.  It could be the English major in me overanalyzing shit, but I interpreted his Listening-sample reflips on Dream Merchant 2 as his way of paying homage to his past and saying goodbye to that period in our lives......(I thought all those interludes were dope as fuck, btw.....)

The guest verse on this one comes courtesy of East Durham's finest, Jozeemo.  I first met Jozee sometime back in '03 at a charity concert for needy Christmas families.  Prior to that, I had been hearing word about him on the local battle circuit ("Yoooo, you gotta hear this dude Jozee......nigga is like a mix between Scarface and Beans...").  After I saw him perform, we talked for a minute and talked about working together on some stuff.  Shortly afterwards, he got locked up.

Once he came home, Big Dho reached out to him about joining HOJ and it was a done deal.  I figured that with all he'd been through during his incarceration, he would be right at home with the subject matter.  I played him the beat, told him the concept, and he wrote his verse in 20 mins.....his studio work ethic is like none other...(only other cat I've personally seen work that fast is Kweli...)

In this mix, you'll hear Jozee's original verse.  Dude had just quit smoking about a week prior to recording, and his throat was killing him.  Ironically, it made him sound even more like Scarface..lol  He recorded this version (which me and Pooh dubbed the Faceemo mix), but then came back a few months later and did the final version after his throat healed.  Go show him some love at www.myspace.com/jozeemo

Three mo to go,
Tigallo

P.S.- I guess I wasn't as brief as I thought I'd be..lol

man a brother got a lump in his thoat behind this entry...that era man, it was such a great period of time watching everything happen for yall, having yall sign the whatever you say vinyl, being at that 1st nyc show at knitting factory, sitting in the van playing listening outtakes because yall thought brainchild was recording them to the minidisk hahaha...pooh cursing us out for giving somebody a copy of the listening lol...me getting your first songs off of eccentric on napster...napster! its funny, because those days were so innocent like we were all rap babies, and then yall skipped a few grades deservedly...its still a beautiful thing to watch yall...okay im getting emo reminiscing on 2002 and shit. hahaha....

used to be my homie, used to be my ace, now I wanna slap the taste out your mouth (c) dr. dre

so fitting....

it's a shame when somebody that you loved like fam turns around and backstabs you. it makes you wonder what the hell did you do to them to make them treat you so bad (c) club nouveau. it's even worse when it's your own fam that you're beefin with....but that's a long story. things happen for a reason.....you may not see it now for the blessing that it is. i'm still a fan unless you start pulling a destiny's child on us. j/k lemme quit now before i turn this into a mini-blog *LOL*

Honestly, it was heart breaking the read this entry. Not for the fact ya'll possibly will not reunite in the near future, but seeing that how this business can split two close friends. I am however, proud in how ya'll have handled yourself throughout that situation. We have seen time and time again in music (and not just Hip-Hop) how groups spliting can turn into an ugly public mud slinging contest. But ya'll handled it like men and true gentlemen and kept the details in house. Much respect and Happy New Year Tay.

P.S- Yo, Jozeemo does sound like Facemob on this mix, lol!!!

Now this song and Dreams are my absolute favorites on this album. I love this song because I can relate to it in regards to a friend of mine, that shall remain nameless, that has treated me like crap through the years. But she always says she loves me even though her actions say a different thing. This song probably hits close to home with a lot of people. word up to having to having this song on this album.

Well I have to say that this is DEEP! I like this mix. That dude DOES sound like Scarface (and kinda favors him a lil' if you asked me) I wish there would be a reunion, but things happen and people come into your life for a reason, season, and lifetime.

Keep ya head up LB, and I hope that you guys have a PROSPEROUS 2008!

I couldn't hit this blog early like I usually do...I go back to work today. No more up in the middle of the night like a fiend waitin' for the LB blog to post! LOL!

You are winning my crime-drama lovin' lil' heart quoting Snoop and Leaster Freamon. LOL! That is the dopest quote from her I've heard so far and I had JUST used it the day before yesterday.

This song speaks for me too, cuz this past year, I've had so-called close "friends" simply walk away from me over some bullshit. And I cried. I stopped trusting people and I have a hard time believing anything now. That truly "ain't love". I just pray to God that He heals my heart.

That track was the "Okay, I'm coppin' this album when it drop no question" when I heard it on the sampler yall put up on zshare. That beat is too crazy.

I relate to the track because breaking up or parting with a group is sometimes the most stressful shit ever. Niggas you knew from high school, yall be on that rapping chase for a minute, spending late nights, pullin' USA's recording on Cool Edit Pro in ya home studios. It's that shit you start missing. But at the same time you ask, damn... if we came from all that how is it so easy for you to put the knife in a nigga back? Just like yall said

"I've been misconstrued, lied to and abused, but my fam still swear that they love me"

Oh and I had to comment on the skit before "Breaking my Heart" when I first heard it, I busted out laughing. Hats off to yall niggas and everybody who helped ya make this album.

*scratches head* you know, cliches seem to always fit somewhere perfectly... "it is what is"...

fuck, I try not to get caught up in bullshit, politics, and somebody else personal shit... but digress. A real listener can't help but to hear folks oh so personal writings to the music and tend to believe they know more about you than you do... lmao...

as long as music remains the focus everything will always be in perspective. live and let live.

Shit, I'm glad ya'll said something about it. To be honest I was like "how could these niggas have beef wit each other" from what I seen ya'll all cool as shit. But like anything you never know what goes on behind closed doors. I always knew you (phonte) was talking about Pat but was never clear if Pooh was talking about him or someone else (O-Dash maybe?). And like someone mentioned ya'll did handle it pretty good, cause ya'll still on each others projects and ya'll don't really say no negative shit about each other. Either way its one of the best songs on the album, and glad you said something on the subject of 9th.

I swear to God, every song on Getback captures a particular emotion so well, and this one is no exception.

Major props to you for sticking to your guns and leaving your verse unchanged; spit what you mean from the heart!

I have mixed emotions about this song for this reason: listening to it triggers some ill emotions about soured relationships; when I listen to it, I tend to zone out and dwell on the wrongs that have been done...and from reading what others have posted, I'm not the only one who feels this way...

...and I didn't really know you were addressing your own personal situation; I guess you were lyrically generalizing and I thought you were done with it...growing apart, growing up, growing old, just growing. *sighs*

Anyways, I hate to blow up Illmind's spot on the production tip, but as I type this I've got the original joint y'all sampled on repeat: "Is This Love" from "Ji" by Junior © 1982...To anyone reading this, do yourself a favor and add this song to your collection!

Y'all did a dope job recontextualizing/reintrepreting the O.G. version!

to Jozeemo: ya did ya thang thang! Get yours in '08!

Sup Tay, I recently was on the giving side of the "ugly break up/ we not tight like that anymore"... And I have to say I felt and still feel Horrible about it. No need to go into specifics, but she only made me feel worse by telling me (from the heart), that she still loved me and hopes and wants the very best for me. Now how's a nigga supposed to feel after some shit like that. She'll always be dear to me, but WTF... why couldn't she just cuss me out like the regular women would do.........
Thanks for sharing your life with all of us. These Blogs sho'll is addictive! I cant wait for the Dreams Blog. That song is my SHIT!!!!!

This sheds alot of light and insight into that track. Not that yall would prolly care but people have a tendency to run with things and over interpret. Kinda intriguing that you came out and said it but it takes an adult to speak what is on his mind. Interesting, I was hoping that I wasn't reading too much into it. Good luck with the progress of the album. Yall did a great job.
