okay, so i've never really been a big warhol fan. i always kind of viewed him as the n'sync of artists. some manufactured b.s. to get popular with the masses. and then i had to work at the basketball hall of fame the other night for a function and they had a painting of karim abdul-jabar that andy warhol did hanging there. and i couldn't stop looking at the damn thing. it was pretty much flawless. a lot of oil either looks like shit from afar or from up close. they always seem to look good from a certain distance. not so with this. i was enthralled by this ubersimple painting. i probably stared at it for about an hour and then kept coming back to it throughout the event whenever noone was around.. now i have to go to new york so i can see more of his stuff now that i realize how awesome he truly is. i used to just walk by his paintings because i thought he sucked. i still dont' like looking at lithos or photos or scans of his stuff, so i'm wondering if it was just this one or if i just never truly looked at his art before. so who wants to go to new york with me :) anyways, i just thought it was hilarious that i find an appreciation for andy warhol in the basketball hall of fame. but i guess that randomness does fit in the greater scheme of andyist theory. shit only happens when you're not expecting it.

Dude, that's usually the case with alot of the super-famous artists from the past hundred years or so.  Alot of the stuff the masses go for is often relative dreck compared to half the stuff that's misunderstood or just plain overlooked.  You mention it all the time with music and movies.

I've met fine arts majors who thought my favorite Picasso pieces were made by people who came years after him, and when people think of Salvador Dali, they don't think images like the
Don Quixote piece hanging over Mosie's computer... they just think of those stupid melting watches that stoners like to look at when they are high... oh, and don't even get me started on overlooked women artists.

Funky flashback side-note:
Remember that mixed media Superman painting I did years ago?  Remember how Superman was divided into six panels, which each collaged the styles of different artists.  Warhol was one of the six I homaged in that piece.

Yeah, he's awesome.  You've seen my Warhol Superman poster right?  I bought it a year after he died at an all-encompasing retrospective in NY.  Seeing all his stuff in one place (and I do mean ALL.  They were showing his movies there too) was pretty inspiring.  There is a Pop-Art show in Hartford at the Wadsworth going on now until November.  It's my favorite museum.  There are Warhols in that exhibit, as well as Dalis and other guys.  We should round up a posse and go some time.
