The commenters on the Melissa and Pumpkin over at Street Boners and TV Carnage... I hope they feel so good about putting down young girls who are really smart and self-deprecating and trying, just because they're not crazy enough or they're too crazy or they're not originally problemed enough or accomplished enough... what do they WANT them to be doing, besides being entertaining people and telling the truth and making movies and songs and supporting themselves since they were 13 and 15?

Big Daddy just sent me a note about some footage he found of this performance I did with Psycodrama when I was a teenager... pretty wasted, and everyone would put it down if it were now, but since it was a long time ago and got into Spin and The NY Times and books and stuff, people think it was seminal... it's just the same thing, a crazy girl trying to find her way out and laughing about everything and making a big freaking mess. I did think I was being political, but I was so... messy in my thinking, in my life... I had too much energy to get it down right. I had ideas. I rhymed.

"GOT SOME FOOTAGE OF YOU,FALLING ON YOUR FACE ON THE SIDEWALK TWICE OUTSIDE GREEN ST STATION BOSTON. I USED TO BE THE SOUND GUY THERE. HAVE SOME STAGE FOOTAGE OF YOU TOO. NOT MUCH THOUGH..... YOU LEFT THE STAGE AFTER PROJECTILE VOMITING ABOUT 3 MINUTES IN............."

I hate haters.

The Internet has encouraged a lot of people to say things online that would get their ass kicked if they said it to someone's face.

Those kids just need to do what they need to do to survive. Everyone else can take an express local to hell.

Whoa!  I just finished reading the Melissa & Pumpkin piece you recommended, and commented on it at the end of your blog.   I'm not typically interested in the opinions of strangers, and now I'm doubly glad for it.  I didn't look to see what was said at the Street Boners & TV Carnage site, but from what you're saying here, it would've upset me.

We all do and say wacky stuff when we're young.  To put kids down who're being sincere and genuine is just so wrong.  And yeah, Lisa, you're right.  You've got a body of work behind you, and these girls are just only at the starting gate of theirs.  So shame on the assholes who have the gall to think they're better than Pumpkin & Melissa.   I wonder if they'd be nasty to their faces.  Probably not.
