The Fall, The Rise's press release states Interlopers is for fans of At The Drive-In, Glassjaw and Sunny Day Real Estate, alongside a number of other artists. This both piqued my attention and set alarm bells ringing: how often have you listened to an artist based on their influences only to find they're simply a poor third-generation copy? It's certainly happened to me a number of times. So it was with great joy that I found myself pressing play as soon as this ten-track album had ended, for the Midlands quartet have managed to filter the history of post-hardcore into their own individual and impressive sound. Lead single and album opener 'Bite Your Tongue And Walk Away' grabs the attention immediately, boasting a catchy melody despite obvious arty overtones, whilst the second half of the album brings in the soaring chorus of 'Redeem' and the layered guitars of 'By The Skin Of Our Teeth', both positively epic despite their relatively short lengths. Start to finish, the songwriting is strong and memorable, the performances are tight and the sound is beautifully intense. The Fall, The Rise are definitely band to keep a close eye on - Interlopers sees them making a refreshingly distinctive sound on a scene populated by generic screamo bedwetters.
