The story behind "Juanitos Blues"
Funny Story.. Last week I was in the studio with Brian and Mort. It was noon or so on friday. We all ended up sleeping at the studio. I was half asleep on the couch when Brian said he was going to go out for a bit and grab some food. I said "ok" and he said "if by chance the internet tech comes by, let him in, the internet has been extremely slow lately." I said "ok" and just layed there. Sure enough, 20 minutes or so there was a knock on the door, and I awoke form the couch to a 50 year old feller at the door. Regular looking Joe. I said "come in" and assumed he was the internet dude. So I show him where the computer/modem is and tell him that it has been running slow...etc. His 1st response was..."can you repeat that?" I figured he did not speak very good english, so I reiterated the story a 2nd time. Then he looked at me and said " uh... I don't know..." So I was like... "what the !@$ kinda repairman is this?" Then we both kinda just stared at each other.. very uncomfortable. Must have been a good 3 to 5 minutes of just satring at each other...LUCKILY!! Brian walked in shortly after and said "Ohhh Hey Juan!!" and I said "soo.. this isn't the repair dude?" and he was like .. NO! This is my friend Juan. He is from Spain. I invited him over a few days ago to check out the studio. Then we all looked and each other and laughed...boisterously...I said I was "sorry," and we all went into the control room to continue mixing. Mort and I very trying to decifer a few tidbits of info about this guy. We asked him "what do you do for work out here?" His response was "I play guitar--I AM FREE!!" As he raised his arms to the sky. Mort and I laughed without showing it. Well.... after we reached a stopping point with the song we were working on, we asked him to play a song for us. I mean.. anyone who is a 50 year old flamenco guitar player from Spain has just gotta have somethin to say..ya know? Needless to say, our interests were piqued. So Brian put up a couple of room mics and Juan started to play. As soon as Brian started to play the piano, Mort and I looked at each other and; wthout words said..."IT'S ON!!" Mort went and got his sax and I went to the drum set and we recorded this improv jam.... 20 mins. 1 take. What a great moment in time.
