Current mood:  determined

How come it seems that we cant have both...good music and good money. Today's artist seems to always start off focused, hungry and determined to make good music. Then what happens is they find commercial success....ahhhh the bloody corp monster!! Notice how the first album starts off banging, creative, intricate and the sophmore, Jr. and Sr. projects all lack those key components that made the Freshman project so good.

I know we can all think of at least two handfuls of artists that started off bomb and then over the years just lost it.

It becomes very clear to the consumer that what is more important is good money and not good music. They find the nitch to create radio hits and get paid and then to those artists...nothing else seems to matter because once again we associate wealth in this life with success....so they feel they have arrived and no longer need to stay hungry, eager, determinied, HUMBLE...

I love local, underground, true....music! Why?..because those cats are the hungriest and the truest....

YES! I want to get paid and make good money....but I will never sacrifice good music for good money!

Yo, you hit the nail on the head homie. its like this in every genre of music, also. you need to listen to KRS-ONE's 'Down the Charts' song... and really a lot of his music kinda discusses the topic of the most important thing is being true to himself and representing hip-hop first and foremost.

i guess i can understand to some extent why groups sell out to the mainstream on the regular, because they see less talented musicians raking in the dough, and all they have to do is tweak a few songs to join in the fun... but as a fan, it is frustrating. thats why so many groups are sorry by album #3... Thank God for those first two albums though!

The other thing is, its just not that easy to put out good music year after year... Nas talked about how your first album is a cumulation of everything in your life up to that point, maybe 18, 22 years or more, then the second album is just put together in one or two years... all the best material often goes into that first project... i thought that was interesting.
