Current mood: tired and exhilarated!
This was an intense weekend! It kind of always is when you're doing two gigs in two nights in two different cities which are 4.5 hours away from each other. Intense, for sure, but extremely fun and awesome as well. I think I'd do it again....yeah, yeah I would. :)
The madness started on Friday evening at 9pm - we didn't get a full sound check at Sullivan Hall because we were the late show and we couldn't very well interrupt the early show to sound check, now could we? (The early show, PS, was this amazing Journey tribute band called Frontiers. They sounded just like the real thing, and everyone was jamming out hardcore to the kick-ass Journey tunes we all know and love. Me and Alabama discovered that setting up the BroJo merch stand is way less of a pain in the ass when you've got Journey buoying you along.) But the sound guy at Sullivan Hall is incredibly righteous and has done sound for us a few times, so a line check was all we needed anyway. It went swimmingly and we were all very happy with the sound - which is kind of a big deal and not all that common in the world of live music, so yay! Me and 'Bama were already decked out in our whites and bling, and once everyone else got ready, we went off on our Sullivan St. Parade!
It was all very well and good for the first few minutes - people were stopping to watch and take the flyers we were handing out - the horns were jamming out to When the Saints Go Marching In, with the Right Reverend Dean Dawg on the snare and Reverend Deacon Big Bottom on the big bass drum - and then the fuzz showed up. Why do cops have such a problem with live music on the streets? I don't get it, people! Don't they have, like, criminals to catch and stuff? Aren't there thieves and murderers and animal abusers on the loose that need to be stopped?? Why are they wasting everyone's time busting horn players in the West Village? WHATEVER BATCH! So lame. So the parade got cut a bit short, and we headed back into Sullivan Hall to play our set.
We debuted a brand new song called "Make Love to Your Woman," which went down so nice and smooth and sweet it was like we'd been playing it for years. I think it's my new favorite BroJo tune - and hey, you can't beat the sentiment: "You gotta make love to your woman, hold and treat her right. Make love to your woman - every damn night!" Hells yeah babies!
Here's the set we played:
SULLIVAN HALL, 8/14/2009 Sullivan St. Parade >> A Child Shall Lead One Woman Man Bourbon Street Parade Bon Temps Roulez >> Just Can't Stop the Love Bury Me in New Orleans >> Make Love to Your Woman Good Times/What I Got >> A Child Shall Lead Reprise
And here are the righteous Brothers & Sisters of the Revolution who played that night:
Lead Vocals/Acoustic Guitar: Brother Joscephus Keys/Glockenspiel/Trumpet: The Right Reverend Dean Dawg Lead Guitar/Tenor Vocals: Joey C-Note Bass Guitar: Reverend Deacon Big Bottom Drums: Pastuh Peace Saxophone: Captain Delicious Trumpet: Emperor Bonsai Roulez Trombone: Goldenbone Murphy Mandolin/Harmonica/Tambourine: Brother Ben-Jive Soprano Vocals: Alabama Red Alto Vocals: Seoul Sistah #1
The set was HOT. I mean...hot hot HOT. Musically and temperature-wise, it was a smokin' jam. Sullivan Hall isn't known for its amazing air conditioning, but that didn't stop this most righteous crowd from jammin' out hard to the music and message of BroJo. If you were in the audience for this gig and you are reading this now, I want to personally thank you for being so amazing and making it such a wonderful night for all of us!
After our set, we broke down as fast as we could so Rebirth could get up on stage and blow everyone away with their awesomeness - which they did, naturally. The energy in there was palpable, the sweat glands were juicing, the people were dancing, and the liquor was flowing. That's my kinda night!
After the killer Rebirth set, the place emptied out pretty fast, at which point I broke down the merch stand, me, BroJo, Joey C-Note, and Dean Dawg loaded everything into the van (with help from some of our amazing friends), and then me, BroJo, & Dean Dawg went to get Indian Food since none of us had eaten in like six hours. The night ended around a quarter to three, with everyone exhausted but happy - and excited to go to Boston the next day.
The Boston adventure is going to have to wait until my next blog entry - I think I need a nap after all this writing. Have I mentioned yet how much I love to sleep? It's amazing that I get anything done at all.
Till next time - stay righteous, babies!!!
Big love, Seoul Sistah #1
