Hey guys
Every little bit helps - forget waiting for the government to do something - we can each change the situation ourselves.
I found a page with a heap of good tips - even just doing one will make a real difference - http://www.personallygreen.com/REDUCE_IMPACT_AT_HOME.htm
I also have a couple more myself that I do, and it would be cool if you guys all added in tips when you think of them. Spread the word! If you can link here or set up your own page with tips, and make just one person adopt an attitude change, then you're helping to fix things - let's make this info so widespread and in your face that it just becomes a part of our psyche:
- charge your mobile phone while you're driving. It's costs nothing to your hip pocket or the environment (as long as you don't drive JUST to charge your mobile phone!). This could make a BIG difference as mobile phones become more and more popular.
- when cooking, turn off your elements a couple of minutes before the food has been completely cooked. The leftover heat from the water or the pans will finish off the cooking for you, free of charge and at no cost to the environment! This could save about 5% of cooking emmissions.
- when ironing, turn off the iron a couple of minutes before you finish - it will still be hot enough to iron one or two more garments. For every minute you iron without it turned on, you will save the equivalent of 1/2 hours worth of power consumed by a 100w light bulb
- I was a coffee whore. I would drink about 6-7 cups a day. I then realised the power and resources I could save by not consuming coffee, milk, and sugar. Imagine what greenhouse gasses we would save on the transport of these goods alone if people cut their consumption by just half. Plus, I was spending about 20-25 mins a day boiling a 2300w jug - duh. I have actually noticed a drop in my power bill - bonus!!! Without coffee, I was a little touchy for a couple of days, but I've come good. I'll cheat and have one or two a week - but that's still a HUGE environmental saving.
- get a free No Junk Mail sticker (Australia) - free call the Distribution Standards Board on 1800 676 136 - they'll ask you to send a SAE to them.
Let's do this.
