June Jordan’s Poetry for the People and is thrilled to present a new series of multigenerational, multidisciplinary performances featuring internationally-known, award-winning poets as well as acclaimed local writers and musicians.

Thursday, March 20th - Women’s History Month!
Mohja Kahf is associate professor of comparative literature in the Middle East & Islamic Studies Program at the University of Arkansas, author of Western Representations of the Muslim Woman, as well as her acclaimed book of poetry, Emails from Scheherazad. Her novel, The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf is the coming-of-age story of a Muslim American woman at the intersection of Islamic dress and bad 1970s polyester. She has articles in in Gisela Webb, Windows of Faith: Muslim Women’s Scholarship and Activism, Living Islam Out Loud, Arab American Feminisms, and Shattering the Stereotypes: Muslim Women Speak Out.
Local Artists featured: Chilean poet Ananda Esteva and soul/funk songstress FEMI. If you haven’t seen FEMI yet - you need to come check this sista out! She’ll be sharing some of her new songs from her new album in a special acoustic set!!
Third Thursday is curated by Poetry for the People’s Director Aya de Leon and produced in collaboration with Lisa Marie’s Third Root Productions, The UC Berkeley Office of the Chancellor and UC Berkeley’s African American Studies Department.
