I know this isn't my country and I shouldn't interfere, but I couldn't resist passing this along from someone on one of my Yahoo groups.  Cut and pasted from the petition itself:

~*~*~*~

Have you seen the Republican Party's platform position on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"?

It contains this plank:

"To protect our servicemen and women and ensure that America's Armed Forces remain the best in the world, we affirm the timeliness of those values, the benefits of traditional military culture, and the incompatibility of homosexuality with military service."

That's right -- this week at its national convention, the Republican Party once again made discrimination against lesbian, gay, and bisexual service members an official part of its vision for the United States.

Join me in sending a clear message to the Republican leadership that this position is unacceptable. Sign this petition right away urging the Party to reconsider its position:

Thanks for pointing out the petition... I'd been looking for it, though there's no chance in Hades I'll vote for the man. I used to like John McCain, really -- he is a hero of Viet Nam, and was a good man who made a good deal of sense, at least 8 years ago. I respected him. However, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is progressive if it's not properly treated (as you know), and I don't think he's been treated properly. Add that to his increasingly frail health and his very unfortunate choice of a vice presidential candidate (look her up; if you're shocked now, you'll be gobsmacked when you read about THAT piece of work), and it's a nightmare ticket.

Someone in the Repugnican (sic) party has the honorable Senator good and solid, and it's terrifying. We're fighting over here, believe me, and don't think it's not a battle. I wish someone would call for international observers of the election here, as I believe that the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections were rigged. I only know that I've had to watch for the last 8 years as our country has responded to a terrorist attack with paranoia, torture, invasion of a foreign state with no real evidence, and the resignation of the only honourable man in the administration. I've seen our precious civil liberties eroded and snuffed when folks were panicking over threats inflated to make them sheeple, meekly assenting to the formation of what is the beginning of a police state. I sincerely worry for my children.

So, Evelyn, tell us what you really think...

Oish. Many kudos for you giving us the link to let the Nellyphants know what we think, but I doubt it will do much good. They're ossified, phobic, and out of touch.

I agree with you completely. That's part of why I felt I had to pass it along despite its not being my country - the fact is that the USA is probably the most powerful country in the world. Given that, it's *everyone's* concern to keep a weather eye on whether it's likely to be headed by loonies or not ;) We follow where you lead anyway, with anti-terrorist legislation being used to take away our civil liberties, immigration being clamped down on, and asylum seekers being treated like criminals. If we're going to follow what you do, then it would be nice to be going in the right direction!

And yes, there were some very fishy goings on with the vote counting last time around, I remember that - which is worrying, given how scary the Republicans are sounding. Heh, I am a Christian, but I don't want to be ruled by a bunch of Christian fundamentalists, thanks!
