Ron Thompson will be doing some educational outreach this week, beginning on Wednesday, when he opens SF Jazz's "Discover Jazz: The Jazz Guitar" series. The prices are quite reasonable, whether you opt for just one night, or the full series. For more information, visit: http://www.sfjazz.org/education/discover_jazz.asp
On Friday night, Ron is headlining "Evolution of the Blues" in Santa Rosa. Although this event will be more concert-focused, Ron will also be providing historical background on the blues. Opening for Ron will be Impeach This! featuring guitarist Volker Strifler, Bill Noteman on harmonica, Evan Palmerston (bassist with Cold Blood), the Pulsators' Johnny Campbell on drums, and SRJC's own Dr. Joel Rudinow on keyboards. Gary Silva will be holding down the drum section during Ron's part of the show.

While Ron is known as a dazzling musician, what many folks aren't aware of is his vast knowledge of blues history. He has one of the most extensive blues on vinyl collections west of the Mississippi. Not only that, he played with, worked with, and traveled with so many blues legends. He has a wealth of great stories. One of these days someone should just turn on a tape recorder and type them all up for a book!
Hope to see some of you this week. Thanks to all who came out on Friday night at Blakes in Berkeley. If you were there, you know what a remarkable evening it was! Matthew Hanson opened for Ron, and this 24 year old baby faced dude blew everyone away! We were in the back room when Matthew blasted out his first notes, and Kelvin Dixon blinked and declared, "Holy S%$T, that boy can sing!" Everyone was amazed. Watch for more from this talented guitarist/vocalist. He's pretty cute too!
Ron, Kelvin and AJ ripped it up on the first set, and had everyone on their feet dancing! Tre Blue, the late Leonard Gill's fiance, got up on the second set and completely blew our minds as she belted out a few tunes, including a long version of "I'll Take You There." Tre is truly one of the best soul singers out there, and hopefully we will get her out on the stage more in the coming year.
Blakes is bringing back the blues with style, with two concerts last month: Ron's and Tommy Castro. They are hoping to present a major blues act each month, and told us that they are expecting to have Terry Hanck later this year. We urge everyone to support these events--Blakes is well on its way to regaining its status as the mecca for the blues in the East Bay.
Ron and the band recreated the magic on Saturday night at the Torch Club in Sacramento and packed out the house! If you live in the Sacramento area and missed the show, mark your calendar for July 31st when Ron returns to the Torch--one of his favorite venues anywhere.
