Who Gives Kudos:

Friday, May 11, 2007

A big 'konichiwa' from Tokyo, Japan! It's just gone 1 o'clock in the afternoon and I am hanging out in my dressing room at FUJI TV's studios getting ready for my appearance on the popular tv show 'Waratte Iitomo' ('everybody can laugh') where I will be singing my English version of the Japanese song 'Nada Sousou' that I recorded for the Japanese version of my album 'Treasure'. I've been in here in Japan for a few days now doing promotion for 'Treasure' and, despite the jetlag and a serious lack of sleep, have been having an awesome time. This must be about my eighth or ninth visit to Japan, but I haven't been here for a while so it's really nice to be back. I'm so intrigued by the Japanese culture. Everyone is so polite and respectful, following very different etiquette to what I am used to. It's always a bit of a culture shock no matter how many times I've visited before. This time it was a simple pool trip that completely overwhelmed me. The pool was part of a spa/gym complex and right from the outset -after I'd taken off my shoes at the ladies changing room door like the sign said, mistakenly changed into the slippers labelled 'spa' and then been chased by a lady panicked by the fact that I was wearing footwear in the changing room -I knew I was in trouble. I changed in the wrong area, wore the wrong robe to the pool, didn't know that I had to book my place in the pool in advance (only 4 people are allowed in the pool at a time), didn't put my hair in a swimming cap when I was finally allowed in the water and then struggled my way through the whole showering and dressing process on my way out. I never expected my swimming pool visit to be such an adventure.

Yesterday I was in Kochi performing with the Japanese group 'Begin' at their show as a surprise guest artist. It was a wonderful experience -the group are very talented, as well as very kind and courteous, and the audience was very warm. Dinner in Kochi was great too -squid guts and ink, raw baby sardines, sea snails…fortunately there was also tempura (deep fried vegetables for those of you unfamiliar with Japanese cuisine). There's nothing like a bit of recognisable food alongside the completely unidentifiable.
On this trip to Japan I also had the opportunity of working again with the gorgeous harp player Mika and her husband Hitoshi on guitar. They accompanied me on my song 'Summer Rain' which we were performing for a radio show. It was a beautiful arrangement and superbly played.

I'll put up some photos for you guys as soon as I manage to find my laptop-camera connection…Japan was a lot of fun and very beautiful. We timed our trip really well -the cherry blossom trees were in bloom and looked so pretty lining Tokyo's streets in pink.

Speak later!

Please enjoy these pictures from Hayley's Trip to Japan!

Hayley, what a WONDERFUL life you are having! And you are making it even more wonderful for us, your fans, by sharing your experiences. I was hoping that you would be getting some rest before your return to CW, but it appears that you'll have no part of that! Actually, for some people with a high energy level such as yourself, a fast-paced schedule serves to burn off some of that powerful energy. But hopefully, when your head hits the pillow at night, you fall asleep quickly and get some sound rest.
You should write a book about that pool trip. Could become a best-seller. Perhaps you should also write a cooking book based on all of the cuisine you've come into contact with. The different foods all sound (and taste?) very enjoyable. Yummy!
Thanks for sharing. We are all looking forward to the photographs. Don't lose that camera!
Regards, Gene

It sounds like you are having a wonderful time in Japan, dispite the little pool mishap. I would love to travel to Japan some time, as I am also intrigued by the Japanese culture. I hope you enjoy the rest of your time there.

Hi Hayley! You are too funny. I guess you're on a break from Celtic Woman then? I saw you perform in Cleveland and everyone was wonderful . . . probably the best concert I've ever been to! Feel free to post a comment on my page too, LOL! Take care and I look forward to hearing about your next adventure. :-) ~Becky

Hello again Hayley.... just one other thing: as Becky indicates below, "you are too funny". You are an excellent writer and your warm sense of humor pours from your words. This is quite apparent in your blogs and it was also very noticeable at Ulysses. Quite simply, a very loving personality. I cannot thank you enough for the consideration that you give to us, your fans. Oh, one other thing....you have the cutest laugh that I've ever heard. If fact, you don't even need to sing to make me take notice. All you need to do is laugh and I'm one contented cowpoke! BUT, the singing doesn't hurt either.....
See you, Gene

Hello Hayley,

It's so wonderful of you to take time out from your ultra-busy schedule and update us on your activities. While your travels take you to places most of us only dream of going, the pace you are keeping has got to be exhausting. I, for one, worry about you.

On a more selfish note, I can't wait to see you perform with CW in Seattle on May 12. I hope there will be time available for you to sign my copies of everything featuring you in my possession at the time, but if not, at least I will have the satisfaction of having seen you perform in person.

As a completely Hayleywowed forum member of HWI, I will be duty-bound to report back on how the concert will have gone. I know it will be beyond my ability to describe (and I have an excellent vocabulary).

Ed Webster (you always give us an x, so here's an O for you)

Thanks for keeping your Fans posted on your whereabouts! I'm a Vegetarian too, and our Menu Description: "Dinner in Kochi was great too -squid guts and ink, raw baby sardines, sea snails…fortunately there was also tempura"- probably made the "swim adventure" seem trivial by comparison :0 ...No disrespect to your wonderful Japanese friends, but maybe it was one of those times to simply ask for a baked potato and a side of Tofu. Luv, from your fans in the States! =) --Brian

Hi Hayley, I certainly hope that I am able to visit Japan some day. I have never been in a country where the culture is so different than what I'm accustomed to. I hope that you're performing there when I'm there! One of the many interesting things that you wrote in your post was "Dinner in Kochi was great too -squid guts and ink". Now, I love cleaned calamari (squid) and calamari sauce, especially poured over pasta. I'd eat it in movie theaters if I could. But the "squid guts and ink" might take some getting used to, although since I've never had it, I cannot say for certain. I'm assuming that this refers to the squid "internals". I'm also assuming that the "ink" is actual squid ink and apparently is quite eatable (drinkable?). In any case, you are certainly getting to experience all that the varied cultures have to offer. What a wonderful time in your life! If only the rest of us were as fortunate. But then again, we don't have your beautiful "perfect pitch" either. Have fun, stay safe and keep warm! Please don't forget the pictures!
Regards from the states, Gene

Thanks for the update on your travels. The experience at the Spa caused me to really smile, because many years ago I had a similar experience at a hotel in the mountains at Nikko. Look forward to some of your photos from that charming country. With all of your traveling, I;m surprised that you can keep up with what day it is, let alone the hour. I wish you continued success and look forward to you dropping in on us here in Florida one of these fine days.....Vern

Hahaha. Well, at least you get an interesting story out of the whole 'swimming pool' fiasco. Oh, man. Japanese cuizine sounds.......interesting, to say the least. Squid guts? (shudders)

I'm incredibly envious, Hayley. You lead such an exciting, albeit somewhat hectic, life. I would love to, at least for a short time, have that kind of experience. You handle it so well, though.

Anyway, good luck finding your laptop-camera cable. By the way, when my novel hits shelves in a couple of months, you should definitely check out the acknowledgement page where I mentioned you. It might be worth reading......maybe....if you want.

Have fun in Japan.

Yours,
Matthew

Hi Hayley,

Just wanted to let you know you are a great singer.

I specially chose to complete my tertiary education here in NZ hoping to be able to catch your concert here. Chances are slim given that you are based in London now. Hopefully, you will perform back in NZ one day.

Do you mind letting me know if you are intending to hold a concert here in NZ or in Singapore?

No worries if you are busy and not free to reply.

My contact is 0212922716 (NZ number), email drifterkid@gmail.com

Thanks

Best wishes in all your endeavours

Regards,
Kenny

Oh, Hayley, just in case you read these comments to your Blog; I forgot to ask you....would you Please! add your wonderful interpretation of the song "Dulaman" on your next CD? I saw a Video snippet of you singing it live, and I can't get it out of my head. The song fits your voice and personality perfectly! If you are a musical Genie, then I get three requests, right? I'll use one of them to get a copy of Dulaman on CD. You have already fulfilled one wish of mine, I saw a lovely Video of your song "Prayer"- just beautiful. Haunting and Spiritual at the same time. Two wishes left!!! ^-^ --Brian.

I know the date on this has to be incorrect! You were in Portland, OR on 11 May!

I was privileged to see you perform on 12 May in Seattle. What a wonderful performance! Technically I went to see Celtic Woman, but I'd never have bought the tickets were you not to appear--not that I'm not a fan of CW, since I have their 3 CDs and both DVDs, but not enough to spend that kind of money to see them. I'd gladly have spend twice the amount to see you perform. As usual your singing gave me goose-bumps and brought tears to my eyes. I'm only sorry that the schedule did not allow for a signing session since the group had to perform the next evening in Spokane.

I remain your loyal fan,

Ed

Hi Hayley. I saw you in Cincinnati on April 2nd and all I can say is OMG, you are so very talented. I have loved your work for several years now and if I were 30 or 35 years younger and was not married I would love you like you deserve to be loved. You take care and keep up the excellent work you do. You have won a lot of fans in America and we all await your return.
